Biden will rip her apart in the VP debates, I know that.

She adds no help to McCain on economy issues whatsoever.

Pretty transparent parroting out there a woman for the Hillary voters...hope they don't fall for it.

At least she's hot.

FTR, it should have been Obama-Biden and McCain-Palin. Hyphens FTW.

Some of you are such fucking hypocrites. You always rag on McCain for being old, but you're not mentioning Biden's age at all. And if youth is an advantage for Obama, why isn't it for Palin?

Pretty transparent of the Democrats to just parrot out a black guy, sense he has no real experience in anything.

They didn't parrot him out, if anything the establishment tried to decimate him (Read: Clinton). It's been a tough swallow even for the Dems.

Remember he's half black, don't see what being black anyway has to do with shit. If you don't think picking a woman is a 'token' or 'symbolic' move on McCain's part...you are absolutely delusional. He kept saying he wanted a VP with 'credentials' and instantly ready to take over for obvious reasons...he's old and wants that out of a VP.

She's had like a year of being a governor of Alaska of all places and that's it. That's it. Tell me how that got McCain from point A to point B now? POLITICS

The same way Mr. Smarty Smart Gore was suppose to rip apart dumb ol George Bush?

I think "Plugs" Biden is so smug and self-centered that he will get too aggressive with her. He'll come off as the big bad Washington Insider beating up on the Mom.

And who knows, raising 5 kids tends to toughen you, she may surprise everyone and wipe the floor with Plugs.

Right, because she is a woman Biden is gonna make her cry, tear her apart in the debates. Uh huh, have you ever seen her debate? I haven't, and I don't think many people have.

And come on, Obama is portrayed as black. That may be unfair to his heritage, but that's how it is.

There were plenty of people during the primaries who were yammering about how Obama would be the first black this and that. Don't tell me his race had no bearing on some of the support he has among the left, if you think thank then you are delusional. Hell, other than saying "Hope" and "Change" over and over and over again, he has established little firm policy.

Eh, you're gonna see what you want to see out of the situation.

She's got the following going for her:

1) She's pro-life and anti-gay marriage. (not a positive in my book, but it will shore up the base)
2) She's a strong budget hawk, much like McCain. She killed the "Bridge to Nowhere" and cut spending across the board in Alaska.
3) She is young and attractive, balancing out scary old McCain
4) Strong drilling advocate
5) Impeccable ethics record
6) She's a woman

But of course you'll focus on #6 exclusively.

Good choice by McCain, IMO.

Jindal doesn't belong anywhere near a national-level ticket. It's bad enough that we already have President's who think God instructs them to invade other countries. We don't need a President who also thinks that exorcism is a legitimate cancer treatment.

regarding Palin - we already know that McCain has never been, so to say, the favorite son of the Republican party. Now a (former) maverick and a woman on the Republican ticket? That can't sit too well with the hardcore conservative base. Of course, I guess they decided it's a trade off - maybe anger/annoy some of the hardcore conservatives, but hopefully gain more moderates and independents instead.

I think that if he had gotten another older white guy on the ticket, it would play into the image that the GOP is a bunch of angry old white guys.

It DOES soften the image of the ticket, despite Palin's hard-right stance on some social issues, and I think that is a positive for McCain.

"(via politico) If Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin got the job as running mate for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), count her as one of the most surprised.

In an interview just a month ago, she dissed the job, saying it didn’t seem “productive.”

In fact, she said she doesn’t know what the vice president does.

Larry Kudlow of CNBC’s “Kudlow & Co.” asked her about the possibility of becoming McCain ticket mate.

Palin replied: “[A]s for that V.P. talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the V.P. does every day?...

Her evident distaste for the office would be part of her appeal: It would show McCain is running an anti-Washington, reformist campaign.

But it also points to a huge negative for her: It robs Republicans of their most effective argument against Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) – that he lacks experience. "

The more I read and hear reaction from both Republicans and Democrats, the more I like the pick.

It's obviously bothering Democrats for whatever reason and it's obviously firing up Republicans for whatever reason

great analysis I know... that's just what it seems like to me

^ whatever, they'll just spin it that she's taking the position to change the way a VP conducts business and actually be productive or something

No it's got me staggered frankly because it is facially obvious this may be the biggest political pander in presidential history. If I were a woman, I'd be deeply offended.

More importantly, this takes the experience issue off the table. Completely off the table. Which is perplexing because that's his central attack and theme against Obama? Weird.

Of course, the selection of longtime Washington insider Biden dampens Obama's "change" message as well.

The "experience" thing is a talking point, nothing more. I really believe this election will be decided on the issues. Maybe I am being naive and too optimistic about the voting populace.

Not when you are 72 and statistically a higher and higher risk of health problems whatever they may be. You best damn pick a VP at that age that can realistically take over.

What's obvious about this is that this is NOT A SERIOUS PICK. No one in their right mind thinks she's the standard formula of a VP insurance policy. I really just don't get this. It's a wildcard, sure. But is it from courage or desperation?

I did. He didn't say anything. I've got friends who are deep in Democratic politics in DC. They loved the speech but agreed that he didn't say anything.

I do like, however, that you assume I support McCain simply because I point out that politics is an image, and not a policy or ideas game. If it were, HRC would have slaughtered Obama and Biden probably would have given her a run for the money as would Bill Richardson who has an exceptional amount of both local executive experience and international expertise.

Politics is sales. The candidate is a product to be packaged and sold to the public. Once they are in office, they'll be manipulated by the forces that drive Washington; some more so, some less so. Occasionally, very occasionally, you'll get a transformative candidate, but they are few and far between.

I know the Obama true believers feel he'll be that guy. He may very well be, but he sure doesn't have the track record to prove it. He won his Senatorial election when it was revealed his candidate forced his wife to go to swingers clubs, he won his Illinois senate primary race by having votes counted for his opponent thrown out. He has sponsored no legislation, he has never cut against the grain of popular opinion, and he defeated the Clinton machine not by taking it head on, but simply by out maneuvering it.

Look, I'm not saying the guy isn't a brilliant politician, I'm not saying he doesn't have core beliefs, I'm not saying he can't be president, I'm not saying he might even be a good president, but lets get past this messianic bullshit and the false hope that he is above the political tide when he has been nothing but a jellyfish, floating where the currents take him.

If you want a truly balanced review of Obama, check this article out from the Economist: http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cfm?story_id=11959309

Ruh Roh, I was just reading the feedback on CNN and came across this post:

Quote :
" As a lifelong liberal Democrat from San Francisco, I couldn't agree with you more!! Excellent, unbelievable choice! She has a 90% approval rating and is an impeccably straight politician (as politicians go!) Aside from her stellar record, picking a working blue collar WOMAN with 5 kids, one in Iraq AND you didn't mention her youngest who has Down's Syndrome! - was indeed a stroke of genius. I agree...McCain wins, and the Obama supporters, who have so arrogantly assumed the whole country would "come around" and fall at the feet of their candidate, are going to have to take responsibility for losing this election for us.

Though I have to take issue with being called "disgruntled"!! I am a highly educated and intelligent woman making a choice based on the information I have, which includes the fact that I do NOT believe Obama has the experience to be President (though to be fair, neither does Sarah Palin if something happened to McCain) I am not bitter or stubborn or spiteful, I am simply making a choice and the teenagers who support Obama are starting to panic and get angry because they're not getting their way.

I was a staunch Hillary supporter and furious at the way Barak Obama walked in and took what appeared to be a sure win (prior to his entering the race when Hillary was light years beyond all other Dems AND every Repub that was running...) marching his ego in and turning it into a probable loss. My husband works at the top of a huge financial firm where even the Republicans are talking about our economy headed into another "great depression", so 4-8 more years of Bush policies devastates me, and I believe will devastate the country, BUT....once again, the Democrats stole defeat from the jaws of victory.

I wasn't going to vote for McCain, but I wasn't going to vote for Obama either. Now I'm considering McCain. I LIKE Sarah Palin!

You won McCain...touche! "

And yes, she does sound like an idiot. Like most blind Hillary-supporting idiots, actually.

Dems better hope she's an anomaly and not representative of what most Hillary supporters are thinking.

man you are so full of shit...really. i mean, that's the most dismissive and bullshit sweeping statement I've ever seen. McCain isn't getting African American vote no matter what he does, nor would any republican. Blacks vote democrats because by and large in favors them to do so. It's not because of color you idiot...they haven't even had the opportunity to vote for someone of their color ever i history for president anyhow...and they've been clearly slanted to the point of absurdity. To say it's just a race thing for them is asinine. Does it gin up their support and impact turnout. ABSOLUTELY! But such a dismissive statement is the very reason why many can't respect what the GOP party has turned into. Your entire brain trust has attitudes like this that no one wants to be a part of. Grode.

The more I read on Palin, the more I keep thinking WTF. She was governor for less than two years, and prior to that, she was the mayor of a town of 7,000 people in Alaska. I think this is a reflection of the true lack of depth in the Republican talent pipeline. My own opinion is that the current administration tainted or screwed over everyone who was being groomed for leadership, and this selection of someone who might have been a rising star is just plain sad.

I really doubt that. I think the smart ones just realized they probably just lost.

Woman are the key component in this election. Even before today, many Hillary supporters were going to vote McCain in a angry response to "Sweety" Obama's snubs.

I think this move will move enough women voters over to the GOP side as well as shore up the conservative base.

A conservative female president is very attractive scenerio in the future.
