My friends apartment does not have an internet connection yet and we're trying to use some of the weak unsecured networks that are available.. the prob is that the signal is very weak and keeps disconnecting.... and way I can extend the range of her laptop?

look for range extender (repeater) on newegg.com

you were right, you just didn't know it.

Cantenna with a laptop/usb wireless card (external-antenna adaptor)
