Can you specify that you want to do a LAN transfer over the ethernet and just surf the Internet over the wireless connection? Can you split 'em like that?

give your wireless a different subnet and set a low metric on it. give your wireless a high metric. make your wireless your default gateway for external traffic. your lan transfers will goto the low metric first and be like fuck, I can't get to that ip from there, then fallover to your wired connection. so by default everything will try to goto wireless (browsing and aim and such) and things that can't get where they're going that way will goto wired.

I dunno, I'm not technically proficient. I just don't want to interfer with these enormous data transfers and I want to surf while I'm waiting for this stuff to get done.

If the router handling the wired LAN is the same as the one handling the wireless, it's extremely unlikely this will help you in the slightest.

yeah, there is no way around this if you're sharing the same router.
