google...shopping...optimum nutrition (ON) chocolate, 5lbbest stuff for the money, hands down
8/22/2008 5:22:12 PM
Or if you didn't want to do that then you can go to The Vitamin Shoppe. There is one at the intersection of Six Forks and Wake Forest Road. Don't go to GNC, they are a bunch of assholes and there products are wayyyyy overpriced, even with the gold card week.Hope that helps[Edited on August 22, 2008 at 5:29 PM. Reason : also I would go with muscle milk instead, has time released proteins and added vitamins as well.]

If you go to Sam's Club or a similar type store with bulk products you can buy 6lbs of EAS (Energy Athletics Strength) 100% Whey Protein for an amazing deal. I can't remember the price but it was a better deal than the competitors I compared it with. I bought one bag of this stuff like a year ago and still am using the same bag 3 times a week....it's awesome.[Edited on August 22, 2008 at 5:35 PM. Reason : no reason]
8/22/2008 5:31:29 PM
yeah.. I went to wal-mart and got a huge tub for 12 bucks
8/22/2008 5:35:54 PM
You have to buy from the online retailers and you should it in bulk. BulkNutrition.com is the best IMO, and I suggest the Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein from ON...by far the best quality. The 5 lb. and 10 lb. are number 1 and 2 respectively on their Best Seller list (column on the right side of the home page). I always grab the 10 lb bags.
8/22/2008 5:53:05 PM
I like the EAS vanilla. Tastes like milk except it's not sweet. Cheap at Sam's club.
8/22/2008 6:21:02 PM
I tried the Body Fortress Brand from target, I think it's 2.5lbs for $13, I went through 2 tubs of the stuff before falling back to the more expensive Optimum Nutrition brand from GNC. I go through 8lbs per month of O.N. from GNC for about $70 with my gold card, whereas the Target brand costs $52 for the same amountthe stuff from target is a bit more potent too, 26g 7g BCAA per scoop vs 24g 5g BCAA per scoop but my god....it tastes so fucking bad....so so so bad...it remains gritty in your teeth and is just god aweful...spend the extra and go with a higher quality brand....AFAIK it only comes in chocolate from Target, I go with the Extreme Milk Chocolate flavor from Optimum Nutrition, I believe they offer like 5-6 different flavors...my roommate uses the GNC brand protein and it's somewhat cheaper and somewhat less potent but it tastes loads better than the cheap Target brandI also tried to 100% Whole Gains brand from GNC, it was the same price as O.N. and only available in Vanilla/Mango...it was bad...don't get vanilla...at least don't mix with water if you do...I only mix with water so chocolate works well for meStein uses O.N.'s tropical punch flavor, I haven't tried it yet but he mixes it with water and claims it tastes good...however I've tried a sample pack of a tropical punch flavor N.O. Shotgun v2 and it almost made me vomit...something about a fruity tasting protein doesn't appeal to my stomach...chocolate goes down thick and chocolaty Viel Glück!

muscle milk (chocolate or mint chocolate) is by far the best tasting one ive had. But the ON gold standard chocolate is slightly leaner i think
8/22/2008 6:46:18 PM
^ hit the nail on the head with that one! Mint Chocolate with 1% milk is the best thing ever.
8/22/2008 7:04:29 PM
yea i went with leanest...muscle milk had too many calories for what I'm trying to do...mint chocolate sounds damn good thoughI'm too poor to afford milk as a mixer
8/22/2008 7:08:30 PM
just eat right and you won't need it..
8/22/2008 7:33:45 PM
^ For me, the powder is a fairly significant PART of eating right...Isopure ftw

starbucks.after they fail, you can buy it by the TON.
8/22/2008 8:41:41 PM
target stuff isnt that bad, but it doesnt mix that well.i just bought 6lbs of GNC for 36. they have a sale right now even for non-card holders. the huge tub is only 60 though not sure how many lbs that is, but still 6/lbs is good.

If you are going to use protein as a supplement to replace meals or as a snack, I would look into a mixed protein like that of a micellar casein/whey mix.

ON nitrocore is pretty good, but nothing beats the cytosport muscle milk (mint chocolate). Even with water it tastes great and isn't a bad price. You can use it as a meal replacement as well, it has slow release casein proteins as well as vitamins to sustain you throughout the day. (and it doesn't give you the shits)
8/24/2008 3:25:06 PM
I found a sealed can of this stuff in a kitchen cabnit when i was cleaning today
8/24/2008 4:00:28 PM
The EAS Whey protein at SAM's Club is by far the best bang for the buck for everyday prices.ON is good, but I don't buy their Whey stuff just cause I get it at SAM's, but I do buy their Casein protein powder, which is excellent.
8/24/2008 4:06:41 PM
I actually cant stand my ON fruit punch. I thought it would be a nice change of pace for the summer. Mistake. Ill be switching back to my basic chocolate once Im done. The fruit punch just doesnt mix well and takes chemically(?) to me. The choco with water isnt delicious but its easy to drink.
8/24/2008 4:39:54 PM
i was out of milk so i mixed vanilla powder with red gatorade. not as bad as you might think.

I never really got this... do yall not eat actual meat? I mean I'm willing to bet i have significantly more muscle and less fat than most of the people in here and have never touched a supplement in my entire life.I'd also bet most of the excess protein you're eating in this powder goes right down your toilet.Sans aaprior because she works out like a machine... At my peak I was 7% body fat, benching 2x my weight. Trying to back to around those numbers now, thought not as low on the body fat %, probably more around 8ish. Will take awhile though heh. Im at 10% now and only benching about 150% my body weight since I just started lifting again.I was pretty up on this stuff when I wrestled, wanting to maximize strength while minimizing weight. A lot of body builders tell you to eat 1gram of protein a day for each lb of body weight you have. If you are lifting 5-7 days a week heavily that is pretty accurate as an upper limit, you would never need more than this and this is really for heavy lifters. Any more would go down the toilet) If you're working out 3 days a week with an average routine, it is closer to like 0.75 grams of protein per lb of body weight. Modulate in between depending on where you feel you are at with your workout. (the average we are told to consume for an adult male is close to .5 grams of protein /lb of body weight for the "normal" person who isnt lifting weights as a reference). If you take someone who is lets say 175 lbs. the 0.75g/lb method puts them at about 130 usable grams per lifting day, and the average we are told to consume for a healthy diet if not lifting would be about 87.5A can of tuna has about 25g of protein, a full pound of steak has about 75g if its super lean (and thats a lot of red meat heh), an egg has about 7g, your average chicken breast sandwich would have about 40 if you're lucky I would guess. So you can see that someone going for the 130g in a day could eat all of that and only be around 140, that is a lot of food and a lot of meat to be consuming just to get the protein you need. The reason we use supplements is NOT because we don't eat meat at all, it is because it is hard to get the amount we need without eating more meat and take in all the other stuff associated with that food than some of us want to eat in a day (I try to stay away from consuming tons of red meat just to get protein). Eating several cans of tuna a day gets old, and so does eating chicken for dinner every day. We take the supplement because (like ON natural gold standard) we can get the protein we need in a LEAN fashion and avoid some of the extra fat and calories that may come along with the other "natural" methods to get protein.I know personally I have a banana and yogurt for breakfast, and even though I am lighter than my 175 lb example, that leaves me with 2 meals + snacks to get over 100g of protein on lifting days which can be challenging without supplementing it or eating 4 cans of tuna or 3 chicken sandwiches the rest of the day. I never use any other supplements but protein is legit.[Edited on August 25, 2008 at 11:01 AM. Reason : ]

I'm not gonna go through and rattle off all my stats but they're pretty good... i don't max though.everything i do is sets of 10 or more... right now bench is at 1.5x my body weight for 4 sets of 10.
8/25/2008 11:10:58 AM
However, supplements really do help. I do eat a lot of lean meat and chicken, eggs, nuts, and other stuff but to get the 200+g I need to build more muscle, I need some other form. That's all we are saying. And to add to that protein is not everything, you need vitamins/minerals and a good daily intake of carbs and fats giving you the drive and energy you need in the gym. Not to mention you need a killer workout to stimulate the muscle to grow...duh, then sleep and rebuild.
8/25/2008 11:22:19 AM
^^doesnt mean you might not benefit from taking more protein That is very solid, but not that uncommon for people who have good routines and work out on a regular basis.and yea ive only been lifting again for 2 months since taking at least 3 years off (stayed active just didnt go to the gym. So Im happy where I am. But yes at my peak I could have done the 1.5x for sets. I do multiple chest exercises but my but flat bench routine is generally either:10 reps, 8 reps, 6 reps, 4 reps, 2 rep max (I dont count 1 as a max) increasing weight each timeor8 reps, 6 reps, 4 reps, 2 rep max, 2 sets of my warmup weight (8 rep weight) until exhaustion. increasing the weight each round again.I usually do the first routine if I am going for a new max, and do the second if I am doing a max that I have already previously hit.[Edited on August 25, 2008 at 11:27 AM. I've been lifting for like 3.5 months after taking a couple years off.. (i actually think three as well)ohh and i weigh 195lbs (i also run 9 miles 3-4 times a week @ just under a 7.5 min mile pace)[Edited on August 25, 2008 at 11:28 AM. Reason : .]

I only weigh about 135 and ick running. I do it but I never run for more than 30 minutes at a time, just increase the pace haha. Its the one exercise I despise.you may not take the side of protein supplements, but it is the one proven supplement I will stand by. I will agree that most people take more than they need, but it is also true that most people that work out and who dont take supplemental protein get less than they need to make the most efficient gains.[Edited on August 25, 2008 at 11:38 AM. ^^ wait 9 miles in one day = 27-36 miles a week is that correct?Or 9 miles total? I run like 1.5 miles 4 times a week on a treadmill @ about 8 minute pace, just to maintain body fat levels.[Edited on August 25, 2008 at 11:35 AM. Reason : #$]
8/25/2008 11:35:44 AM
I run little runs in between and a big run on Friday usually... I'm training for a half marathon in NOV. and a full in DEC.i'd say 40-55 miles per week which is more than i drive...^^ i probably don't but i just don't think its necessary ... but i eat at least 6oz of lean meat with every meal cept breakfast (i eat 4 meals/day) which is a whole grain all natural pb&j with a banana or an apple. The problem i have with whey is most people eat it all at once in the morn and crap it out before they ever get to use it. I'd rather have a steady flow of real protein from fish, chicken, beef, deer, etc than some powder. But then i hate processed foods anyway... [Edited on August 25, 2008 at 11:54 AM. Reason : .]
8/25/2008 11:47:35 AM
thats why youd go with something like ON 100% natural whey. it is "real" protein. all the meat will break down into pretty much the exact same stuff you are getting from the natural whey.
