I've heard of some people using dog appeasing pheromone for excessive barking depending on the reason for the barking.http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/behavior/a/dogbehaviorprob.htm

Do NOT get a cheap bark collar. If you want to spend $30 or $40 get a Dogtra yapper stopper, I think they are about $80 online. When you are done you can easily sell it for $50 and it will work. If you buy a $30 collar it will not work right, you will have to buy $texas batteries to put in it, and you will not even be able to give away that pile of crap when you are done with it.I looked into them and most of the pro trainers I talked to or had written recommendations on their site (not your average pet trainers, national level competitors) used the Dogtra. One breeder had killed pretty much every brand of collar at some point and only bought dogtra now. I sold her my used collar, since her roommate let one of the dogs chew up a collar.

i wen't over to this guy's house and he had two dogs that never barked, but made this weird quiet yelp sound sometimes. i asked a buddy what the deal was with the dogs. he said they (the owners) had their vocal cords cut. i thought that was a bit extreme. i didn't know you could even do that.
8/19/2008 12:51:44 PM
Yeah, I'd not have a dogs vocal cord clipped. Don't want the risk of a vet slicing an artery and the shock collars are very effective and not painful (it's an annoying sensation, but I wouldn't call it painful).

my super redneck ignorant uncle had his dogs' vocal cords clipped and had their canines removed (so they wouldn't do so much damage to each other when they fight). yeah, model pet owner right there.what kind of vet would do that anyway???[Edited on August 19, 2008 at 1:11 PM. Reason : ]

I just trained my dogs (boxer and a brittany) to not bark.the boxer we scolded from the time he was a puppy if he barked. The brittany was a barker when we adopted her as a 2 year old and the scolding thing seemed to work with her as well. Also i have a harebrained theory that she took cues from our boxer as well, because it just seemed too easy to have broken a 2 year old rescue of a barking habit.

update:we bought the PetSafe outdoor bark control bird house thing this weekend. neighbor dogs shut up within 24 hours. they will still bark a tiny bit, but it's greatly greatly diminished and i can now sleep past 530am.packaging says it can take up to 2 weeks for a dog to learn that the horrible high pitched noise it makes happens when they bark, but the jack russel terrors next door learned quick.btw, don't turn it on then face it towards yourself while the dog is barking. yes it's super high pitched and most ppl can't hear it, but it hurts.

^ thats pretty cool. i don't have a problem with dogs barking, but i'll remember it if i do.(now, my neighbors might have a problem with MY dog barking, but that's their issue not mine )
9/15/2008 4:45:22 PM
put dog on leash, get on bike, ride fast, don't stop till the dog does.seriously, barking is pent up nervous/excited energy. get rid of the energy and get ride of the problem

Dude, THANK YOU! THIS THREAD HAS SAVED MY FUCKING LIFE.I am buying that god forsaken bird box ASAP, to shut the god damned neighbor's dog up. I can't wait to fucking position this fucker near that dog.

I have the lemon spray collar, It works great when it's on the dog. She knows when its off she bark with no consequences. When she is wearing it you only get one or two barks, then a few whines, then she goes to sleep.

I just sent the link for that birdhouse thing to my parents. Their neighbors have 8 dogs that they never walk or really pay attention to, just leave them in the yard to bark incessantly. I swear it's animal abuse but animal control doesn't agree with me

A lot of places have ordinances/laws preventing you from owning any more than a certain number (Often 4) of dogs. I guess their area does not have such ordinances/laws.[Edited on September 16, 2008 at 2:30 AM. Reason : ]

It's in the Raleigh city limits and I feel like when we looked it up 5 years ago there wasn't one or they were just under the limit. That doesn't mean it hasn't changed since then though.j/k I remember what the problem is. My parents' live in a no mans land where sometimes it's considered Raleigh and sometimes they like to consider it Wake County. So even though Raleigh PD responds to our 911 calls things like ordinances they say fall under county jurisdiction. But that might have changed with all the building they've done in the area.[Edited on September 16, 2008 at 7:54 AM. Reason : ..]

Some people across the street from me (or the people whose yard backs up to theirs) have a dog that barks all night. It's normally not bad for me, but I'd hate to be their next door neighbor. I don't understand how a person can go to sleep hearing their dog barking almost non-stop right behind their house. It shows that they don't care about the animal or about the neighbors.

A friend told me that if you teach a dog the "talk" command it actually prevents them from barking when not told to "talk". I'm working on teaching my dog that right now.
9/18/2008 3:45:10 AM
man i remember putting one of those on my dog and as soon as he barked he yelped like he was on fire and ran into the woods for like a day and a half
9/18/2008 7:33:24 AM
^^that has never worked with any of the dogs in my family. the ones who were taught to *speak* are the ones who bark at the door constantly until you let them in/out. they bark whenever they want something, whether it's food or a toy or to go out, etc.it's not a good idea.

my sister used one of the citranella based collars for her dog she claims it worked wondersthe dog barked once, got sprayed, went into a huge wtf? moment, barked again, got sprayed again, figured it out and hasnt barked inside since.and this was a barkin' ass dog
9/22/2008 10:45:28 AM
^I have one of those and love it. The only problem is my dog is pretty stupid/stubborn. Many people say this collar "trains" the dog not to bark. With mine she barks, gets it, then a short while later will try again and get it again. It is still a huge improvement because it stops the incessant nuisance barking. If I take the collar off at all she will bark and get away with it and then just continue non-stop. I usually just leave the collar by the door and put it on when she goes outside for a while, or right before I go to sleep. Otherwise she will bark non-stop and wake up everyone.
