I was sort of upset when I was told that if I did not pay my school bills by august 1st that my classes would get dropped. Has anyone tried to argue with the administration over this? Like the student government? Seems a bit harsh because classes dont even start until the 20th.
8/18/2008 4:58:41 PM
they gave you a due date - why do you feel you should be exempt from the due date - maybe they need 20 days to accommodate 30,000 people if payment was due the day before school starts - what would happen if 5,000 people decided to not pay on the last day - how would the school handle that in 24 hours?when were you upset - when you applied to ncsu or when you decided to finally read the rules/regulations?
8/18/2008 5:01:24 PM
What's harsh is you not paying when you were told to and risking not being able to take classes. That's harsh.
8/18/2008 5:02:29 PM
You can always call them and have them put a hold on your account if you're awaiting payment via a third party source. Actually, I think they have an online form for that now.
8/18/2008 5:06:06 PM
i just dont feel that threatening to drop your classes is an acceptable tacticI literally got an email THE DAY BEFORE notifying me that I needed to pay. and no, im on a PhD fellowship so I assumed that my department would pay everything, like at 99.9% of graduate schools[Edited on August 18, 2008 at 5:17 PM. 8/18/2008 5:13:31 PM
But they will drop your classes. Would you rather them not threaten to drop your classes and then do it anyway?
8/18/2008 5:16:59 PM
^^ it's very simple really, you don't pay? then you don't take classes. It's like taking a shopping cart into Target loading up and trying to walk out of the store when your done shopping. Come on man. really, and like they said you can put a hold on your account, there is a grace period BTW.[Edited on August 18, 2008 at 5:22 PM. Reason : .]

no excuse really. you should have paid what you owed. you're supposed to check your university bills on your own, as they tell you to. when they sent the e-mail couldn't you just call?and while nc state will pay most/all of your tuition/fees, you still have to sign 2309903409834 forms and talk to 90938403984 people, but at least they pay for it.and if you are
8/18/2008 5:36:19 PM
Your problem is with your grad program fellowship.I was late one time with bills and they didn't actually drop my classes.
8/18/2008 5:53:16 PM
if you're going to get your PhD I'd think you're smart enough/grown enough/have gone to school long enough to be on top of this shit.Man up and stop being a baby.
8/18/2008 5:54:19 PM
i dont see any replies that say "i love that rule". I know i'm supposed to pay my bills on time, I did call, I paid, and they didn't cancel any classes. As students we have the right to voice our opinions and petition to change rules we dont agree with - thats why we have a student government. Same goes for the real government - we have the right to vote to change laws we don't like. I'm sure the administration will be willing to cut the students a deal on this rule, and not drop anyone's classes. What I dont understand is why no one's done anything about it. I'm not being a baby, I just believe in being in control of my college experience and making every student's experience here better.[Edited on August 18, 2008 at 6:03 PM. Reason : -]

what im trying to say, is if everyone just signed a fucking petition, none of us would have to worry about that ever again. How hard is it to ask everyone at a tailgate to sign a petition? why hasnt anyone done it yet?? and that goes for a lot of rules. again, the student government exists to oppose the administration on issues that students dont agree with.[Edited on August 18, 2008 at 6:11 PM. you think they'll care about a piece of paper with unreadable signatures from drunk people?
8/18/2008 6:12:03 PM
I believe you're confusing a "threat" with a "policy".It's not like they went through their records and decided that they were going to hold your courses ransom.
8/18/2008 6:12:30 PM
People want money for services? What the fuck kind of world do we live in?
8/18/2008 6:19:38 PM
Holy crap. What the hell ever happened to personal responsibility, and taking care of the shit that matters to you?
8/18/2008 6:22:46 PM
i'd like to meet your hippy parents you were born in the wrong era
8/18/2008 6:46:54 PM
how about just saying "pay your shit on time and we'll give you a 10-day grace period JIC before we do anything"
8/18/2008 6:48:01 PM
Why should they give you a grace period when you know you have to pay your shit on time? What's the point of even having a due date then? This isn't the power company. You're denying paying people their ability to register for classes that unpaid people are currently in.And frankly, if you're going to coddle anyone, it should at least be the people that you've already gotten money from.[Edited on August 18, 2008 at 6:50 PM. they do give you a grace period. from the time you are accepted until the due date.what would you like them to do? "Oh, it's ok that you still haven't paid your tuition. We'll just sit here hoping you send it to us sometime, while you enjoy all the benefits." There has to be a cut off and some real consequences for it.
8/18/2008 6:55:00 PM

8/18/2008 7:15:23 PM
Benefits like being in the class. For a PhD student, you sure are dense.
8/18/2008 7:15:28 PM
There are rules for paying for your classes for a reason. The school has to justify allocating faculty and staff where they are needed. If you don't pay up they want to find someone else who will. This is especially applicable in cases where a course is full.
8/18/2008 7:30:51 PM
Seriously? I can't believe I just read all this stupidity, from a PhD student, no less! If the school pays your tuition/fees...and you got a "threatening" aka REMINDER e-mail...it takes 1 phone call or driving over there to get things situated.Man up and quit bitching about due dates. You must be one of those who cries calling your credit card company to please take off the late payment because it "seems a bit harsh."[Edited on August 18, 2008 at 7:35 PM. Reason : .]

Don't forget all of the students that are sitting on waiting lists for classes that will only get into a class if someone drops/gets dropped. So if you decide that you don't want to pay on time, great, there is another student that is more than happy to slide into that class who IS able to pay when they are told.God, you are fucking cry baby. Seriously, if you are this bent out of shape about this incredibly insignificant issue, you are going to be SCREWED when you get into the real world.[Edited on August 19, 2008 at 9:24 AM. This policy might seem a little harsh, but it's not nearly as disruptive as Financial Aid's pattern of holding refunds on loans & scholarships until the first day of classes. Sort of makes it hard for those loans & scholarships to buy books and supplies when you don't have them until classes start. And for some reason the average undergraduate student has $2,200 in credit card debt.
8/19/2008 10:09:24 AM
i didn't read past the first few repsonses, but as a phd candidate myself: it doesn't matter if your classes get dropped. are you really afraid that graduate level classes are going to fill up? and as a person who is at least 20+ years old, you should know what financial obligations you have before you go to a school.

there HAS to be consequences for not following the rules/policies/procedures. i think it's perfectly acceptable for ncsu to drop your classes if you don't pay. every bill has a due date. part of going to college is growing up/turning into an adult. get over it. this is how the world works. no, they will not drop the policy if enough people sign a petition. that's ridiculous. i have a hard time believing that someone who has an undergraduate degree and is working on a PhD would think such a thing.
