If it was fast growth i'd be more worried than if it was slow growth. My guess is that it may need to be aspirated and you may end up with a little bit of pain meds if its bothering her when she trying to eat, maybe some steroids or something else thats anti-inflammatory, and antibiotics just in case. Depending how serious they may want to do like a biopsy/lump removal, but my guess is still aspiration and meds.

My dog had something similar looking just a few weeks ago, although it was further back on the snout.Popped up over about a week and a half. They aspirated and did blood work. They determined that it was a scratch or cut that got infected, and they prescribed a topical antibiotic, which has cleared it up.I hope everything turns out okay for you.]]

vet doesn't know what initially caused it but said she's just irritated the hell out of something and it should go away in a few weeks... he gave me some doggy neosporine and said if it gets worse or doesn't heal in 2 weeks he'll do a biopsy and figure out wtf it isit came up fast i noticed it yesterday and today it was worse so i took her in asap.[Edited on August 13, 2008 at 10:14 PM. maybe a strain of HPV? My dog had a couple of roundish pink growths in on his jowls last summer/fall. The vet said it was a strain of HPV dogs can get and that it would go away over time naturally and that cutting them off wouldn't help (just grow back). 1-2 months later they were gone.

its scabbed over today and doesn't look quite so bad but its still pretty swollen ... i've been putting the stuff on it the vet said to and i don't know if there is anything more i can do

I am a veterinarian (this is my husband's user name) and I would be worried about a tumor given the fast growth. Something like a mast cell tumor would be worrisome given how fast it came up and how red it is. Did the aspirate show anything? Often an aspirate can help with knowing if it is a tumor or not. Even if it is a tumor, antibiotic ointment would probably help some given that it looks ulcerated and probably has a secondary bacterial infection. Therefore I wouldn't rule out a tumor if there is a scab forming after using the antibiotics. I would disregard the comment someone made about the HPV. Dogs do get a canine papillomavirus infection but it causes masses within the mouth (rather than on the outside) that are more cauliflower looking. This doesn't look like that to me at all. If it doesn't go down fast with the antibiotics I would definitely recommend a biopsy.

yeah i'm there it really hasn't changed since the visit... the vet didn't really do shit i'm kinda pissed no tests or anything just looked @ it dumbfounded...thanks for the insight i'm nervous about it being a tumor tooo.

get a second opinion. seriously.

i have a strong urge to be an ass here and say something about you giving the dog an std, but i won't because i love dogs.don't worry, i still get to call you a retard though. get that damn thing looked at by another vet ASAP. just like on humans, you don't fuck around with strange growths, especially ones that come fast. it certainly could just be a benign cyst or a very infected cut that's formed a puss sack, but don't take your chances. especially around the mouth. on the chance it is malignant and they have to cut some chunks out, she could be severely impacted for eating. any vet worth two shits should have been all over at least a needle biopsy if not more, not just say "hey, that looks cool lets see what it does!!11".
8/17/2008 4:31:37 AM
that pic is disturbing. i hope your dog is okay though. keep us updated!

i think its going down some... it has no puss or anything... i've talked to a couple people about it but they've all said its a small sore she's irritated the shit out of and it will eventually go away but will probably scar because she won't stop irritating it.
8/17/2008 10:29:44 AM
Even if it is showing symptoms more like a sore - it could still be a tumor. It could just be that the tumor irritated her so she's licking it and rubbing it profusely. Through working at the vet I've seen several cases of tumors on the mouth. Fortunately they've all been able to be treated with chemo. Good luck with her, keep us posted.

Post some updated pics.

8/18/2008 12:36:12 AM
glad to see we got a vet's opinion in here.Let us know how she does!
8/18/2008 11:00:28 AM
Well i checked it out this morn and it looks like its going down more... I'm taking her back to the 1st vet if its not better by the end of the week. What the vet said is dogs tend to get build ups of white bloodcells that can cause this effect he mentioned that tumors do not usually grow in 1-2 days and that it didn't appear to be bacterial or there would be puss around the whiskers. I'll take a picture when i get home from work. Thanks for the opinions and professional advise like i said before if it makes a turn for the worse i'll take her back to the vet again... i'm just sick of paying $texas and no one doing anything. My vet understands that my dog is my daughter and i would do anything to fix her but in all honesty it doesn't seem to bother her at all until people start to mess with it but then again she was adopted and abused prior to so pain doesn't effect her much at all.
