something where the outcome is SOLELY determined by voting isnt a damn sport, its an athletic exhibition or something, but it isnt a sport. You need a measurable, objective means to judge who wins.
8/12/2008 8:52:22 PM
sounds like somebody got robbed
8/12/2008 8:57:14 PM
no, just saw some judging shit and I know I'm not an expert but there was SOOOO little difference between a 9.5 and 7.1, not saying the 7.1 score would have won with another judge but they probably could have just as easily scored it 8.2 to 7.9
8/12/2008 8:59:33 PM
this is the first time i've ever agreed with JB
8/12/2008 9:11:53 PM
Boxing isn't a sport?
8/12/2008 9:15:26 PM
oh Andy... you simple simple man... I knew someone would pop in with that answer... that why I put SOLELY in all caps
8/12/2008 9:16:05 PM
punches landed is sort of like a quantitative scoring i guess
8/12/2008 9:16:11 PM
^ yup
8/12/2008 9:16:48 PM
and i guess one dude KtfO would indicate a loss, binary there
8/12/2008 9:19:24 PM
gymnastics, diving, ice skating... no wonder nobody likes those sports
8/12/2008 9:20:31 PM
perhaps the judging could be determined by decibel-level in the crowdbut without letting the crowd know the score as it is going
8/12/2008 9:22:14 PM
so fencing is a sport but gymnastics isn't?
8/12/2008 9:22:29 PM
at least fencing has a definite outcome. gymnastics you could be flawless and get a 15.8 or something while somebody else is flawless and get a 16.3. Judges could have things against America or other countries (since most people seem to hate us)
8/12/2008 9:24:32 PM
remember, I didnt say it wasnt athletic... just said its not a sport
8/12/2008 9:24:48 PM
8/12/2008 9:25:37 PM
This is Mr. Objectivity speaking. he knows his shit.
8/12/2008 9:25:52 PM
I guess we can finally say that cheerleading isn't a sport either. I used to think the competitions were, but you've opened my eyes.[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 9:26 PM. Reason : g]
8/12/2008 9:26:05 PM
8/12/2008 9:27:22 PM
^^^ exactlyby the way, my previous definition involved:competitors must (or at least have the potential to) directly, physically influence each other either with a part of their body or an instrument that is wielded by the person[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 9:30 PM. Reason : d]
8/12/2008 9:28:32 PM
fuck badminton, that shit is silly.
8/12/2008 9:29:56 PM
ah, so golf is no longer a sport...unless you count being in the same grouping direct interaction...which would make your interpretation of your own definition loose at bestand badminton is ridiculously difficult[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 9:31 PM. Reason : .]
8/12/2008 9:30:35 PM
no, there is potential for a ball to strike another ball... very little chance, but there is a chance... and "difficult" has nothing to do with it, brain surgery is "hard" but its not a sport[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 9:33 PM. Reason : d]
8/12/2008 9:32:07 PM
full contact brain surgery is though
8/12/2008 9:32:49 PM
true... Ray Lewis Brain Surgery
8/12/2008 9:33:19 PM
Darts?
8/12/2008 9:34:34 PM
so the small chance of 2 1.86 inch diameter spheres touching on a 15,000 square yard surface (just a guesstimation of a 300x50 fairway) counts as direct interaction?not saying it never happens...but does it even happen once a tourney?[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 9:36 PM. Reason : .]
8/12/2008 9:35:26 PM
^^ Game, not a sport(unless in darts if your dart happens to hit theirs and somehow knock it out of the board and their score changes or they have to rethrow it then it would be a sport)I dont think this is the case but have never played hardcore by the rules darts^ yup. you got to be objective here, black or white, otherwise you get into judgement calls "well, thats enough chance so that one counts, but this one which is .3% lower of chance doesnt etc"[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 9:37 PM. Reason : d]
8/12/2008 9:36:16 PM
oh, and you also just made curling a sport while denying the amazing athletic ability displayed by so many of these "non sports"
8/12/2008 9:37:44 PM
I did not deny anything, I said that there are athletic exhibitions, they just arent sports... once again, how hard it is doesnt matter at all... fucking Chemical Engineering is hard, doesnt make it a sport...someone who is really good at breakdancing has amazing athletic ability... but its not a sport[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 9:40 PM. Reason : d]
8/12/2008 9:39:28 PM
dude, curling is awesome. It's definitely a sport, don't you see how fast they have to move those little brooms things? That's strenuous man.
8/12/2008 9:41:09 PM
Slapjack = sport
8/12/2008 9:41:50 PM
because chemical engineering doesn't involve years of fine tuning one's physique to be one of the best in the world
8/12/2008 9:42:21 PM
neither does baseball... so you are saying you have to be the best in the world for it to count?[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 9:43 PM. Reason : d]
8/12/2008 9:42:56 PM
Sport(not to be confused with 'game')*something grown people do for play that does not involve...-using a writing utensil-using a firearm, unless target is inanimate, or motion is controlled (not random...i.e. live animals)*must involve physical action (no chess or poker)what else
8/12/2008 9:43:14 PM
so, you're also saying track isn't a sport? nor is swimming? unless you start saying that vortexes created in the air/water count as interaction
8/12/2008 9:45:10 PM
its an athletic event
8/12/2008 9:45:54 PM
THE ORIGINAL SPORTS AREN'T SPORTS AT ALL!
8/12/2008 9:46:19 PM
wrestling is old, and its definitely a sport
8/12/2008 9:47:04 PM
i would think the interaction would be one competitor seeing that the other is either currently winning or losing, which would affect their next decision one way or another
8/12/2008 9:47:06 PM
hmmm now that could be added, goes against the "physically touching" part but I will think about itI just really dont think something that theoretically could be held where each person does their "run" by themselves 1000s of miles away and then you just compare scores/times should be a sport. You arent technically competing against someone else you are just trying for your best score and hope that it beats someone else's best score. Its not like a diver would see another diver score a 7 and be like "oh sweet, I can just score a 8.5 and win so i wont try as hard"[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 9:50 PM. Reason : d]
8/12/2008 9:48:16 PM
8/12/2008 9:49:56 PM
yeah, too bad I didnt say "MY DEFINITION" oh wait... I did, goalexlax is arguing just to argue once again and loses once again
8/12/2008 9:51:11 PM
Golf has a definite score though. You count the strokes, whoever hits it in in the fewest strokes wins. Swimming and running have times, you can't say they aren't right, or could be skewed by personal opinion. If you told 50 people to look at a gymnast routine you might get 50 different scores.
8/12/2008 9:51:12 PM
right, but if you look up, he said he already had a rule where for it to be a sport it had to involve some shance of direct interaction or other bullshit such as thati'm not arguing for the sake of arguing, i'm arguing because you're making some dumbass statement that excludes a huge percentage of sports from being real sports[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 9:53 PM. Reason : .]
8/12/2008 9:52:29 PM
^^ yup^^^^ and I said I would think about it... definitely leaning towards not counting it^ did you not see the relay? dude road that frenchie's wave and thats how he got ahead[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 9:54 PM. Reason : d]
8/12/2008 9:52:47 PM
well then we disagree on that point. I think things like swimming you should be in the same pool, golf should be in the same group or something if possible, but really golf you're always just playing against the course to get the lowest score so that's kinda different
8/12/2008 9:53:52 PM
I would love to see him and treetwista get into it... thread would be 500 pages within an hour
8/12/2008 9:55:31 PM
Good thing you aren't in charge of definitions. We would see some dumbass stuff in the dictionary.
8/12/2008 9:55:37 PM
i saw the relay...i just think it's silly for you to count some minuscule fraction of a chance of interaction such as 2 golf balls hitting as interaction and not counting the psychological interaction of a gymnast watching another gymnast performing as no interaction
8/12/2008 9:56:04 PM
I love how people get SO upset... its not like it being a sport or not makes it any more or less worthy. All I am saying is that to me, a sport is something where the people can physically influence one another and the winner is determined by a score (like an actual event=point type thing, not someones opinion), time, or event (KO).The gymnasts could be in separate rooms, not see each other at all, and still be able to do the same event... are they nervous? sure, but they dont have to worry about someone else physically messing up their performanceI could be at a track, at 2am, and try to run a 40 as fast I can.You put me up against Reggie Bush in a race, and I would still do the same damn thing... him being there wouldnt physically make affect my performance[Edited on August 12, 2008 at 10:02 PM.
