How long is long enough to get "experience" at a so-so job in a big company?

If you're there 1 day you technically have experience, but I didn't feel really confident in the work I do until I was there a year.

a year is a good general rule but not every situation is covered by that...you are being very vague so it'll be hard to get help

i was always told a year

When I'm going through people's resumes to see who to hire where I work I'm a little suspect of anyone who changes jobs a lot because I want someone who can stay in one place long term. I don't want to invest the cash in advertising that we're hiring, and then spend time & money training someone who looks like they wont stay long term. Two plus years doesn't really draw any negative attention. Other qualifications and experience though can off set that general rule of thumb.[Edited on August 11, 2008 at 3:08 PM. Reason : .]

I don't get why people fret over this.Put your resume out. If you get a better job after 8 weeks, then apparently 8 weeks was long enough.

I've heard a year too...just wanted to get some different opinions. I'm bored as hell at this job, but it looks good on my resume. I was just wondering how much longer I should endure this before seriously looking somewhere else. It's a lab job in an academic setting, where I work with 3 other people that are masters or phD students. It's just not my cup of tea.

Start looking for jobs, if you find one...quit this one...profit!
