I figured all of us "negative nancies" and "debby downers", etc., needed a place to address the potential for a coming world-wide economic depression. The banking crisis of the 1980s was substantially worse than todays little problems. As such, I use the 1980s as evidence that banking crisis by themselves do not have depression inducing consequences.

^ What is your metric/source for comparing the two crises?Certainly this current crisis will not have as many bank failures as the 1980's, but given the dramatic consolidation of banking institutions, the scale of each bank failure is higher. It would be interesting to compare the size of, say Citi, to see how many of the savings and loans that failed in the 80s would have to be put together to equal the impact if Citi failed.
