Im curious to know for those of you that watched any of it...what did you think of it? How accurate do you guys think some of the stories were in the various depictions of African Americans in the U.S. today?

Ive been really impressed with the way CNN has portrayed this two day segment coming from someone who is half African American! I think the segments touched on a lot of present day truths.

i watched it and it seemed to me that it was just fill-in

it's the same borderline racism being repeated again and again...i could do almost the exact same thing on white people

summary: racism still exists, but it's as much a product of social branding as it is individuals who are actually racists...also, racism is worse in some areas than in others...in short, DUH

The middle class family they looked at in Arkansas was a very good segment! I wished they would of interviewed a white family in the same neighborhood and asked them what there feelings were when the only blk family moved into the neighborhood.

Now, I think CNN should do a two day segment called, "White in America"....id be very interested in seeing that.

What do you guys think they would touch on?

Considering "white" represents close to 70% of America, and that many hispanics are white, i'm not sure it'd be possible to cover this in a 2 day segment.

Plus, everyone knows what being white is like. Just mix Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond together, and you've covered 75% of all white people.

Pretty good. I think they should have focused more on the self-discrimination sometimes found in brown races. More opportunities for lighter blacks than darker blacks.

I despise racial arguments.

If you say theyre old news and overblown youre a racist.

If you feel the need to bring it into light then youre just furthering the difference (imo)

At my old school, Ohio Wesleyan, there was a black only group which was designed to help black students adjust to everyday campus life. While its fine if theres a group, I dont care -- why are you separating people and then saying how they can fit in seamlessly. Why not just put everyone together?

It just seems counterproductive to me to illustrate the differences and then fight for people not notice the differences.

Im from the North so I realize my views are probably different than a lot of people here. Maybe its just because there wasnt really that tension in the city I grew up in.

I just feel like the more anyone defines themselves as different, the more theyll be treated that way. By no means am I voicing my opinion that way, I just think its how the people in the world work.

HBO does everything better. to watch CNN you'd think black woman and black men were 2 different races of people. i think the days are gone when people are defined by race. its slowly changing. i guess Martin's dream is coming true. bottom line is everyone is going to have to excel. no matter what the challenges are.

What do you mean they were separating them? A group meeting isn't separating them, it's a group meeting. It seems that it's you are are imposing the idea that it's separation, not them.

Ha, I think I should have clarified more.

It ended up being some members only type thing. Like the people who joined the group never hung out with people outside the group. Yet the black kids who didnt join, just randomly hung out with everyone of all races, religions, groups, etc.

Which is why I thought it was counterproductive. People joined it with the intention of becoming more integrated. But they ended up just being some unfriendly secret society. Yet those who didnt join were just like anyone else. So those that joined the group to integrate were the ones who defined themselves as different and were the ones who werent integrated.
