Is anybody having trouble finding jobs as life science majors. I applied close to 55 different places. Not one response. Is anybody else having this much problem?

Its gonna be a really quiet market until at least after nov. 2

Alot of business majors are getting jobs and here I am stuck. Well, have you tried looking for jobs?

go into sales. i did genetic research for a biotech company in RTP for 3 years after college. it was mindless work and I made shit for pay. at the end of my 3rd year i made less than the previous 2 years.

judging by the fact we havnet had any new engineering work in pharma/biotech tells me as do the previous clients the industry is slow.Genetech is looking to sellamgen layed off 12% last year
7/22/2008 10:19:15 AM
do you have any relevant experience?does your resume suck?gpa suck?or are there really no jobs?
7/22/2008 10:20:24 AM
I see a ton of openings at biogen idec in RTP and Camberidge Mass
7/22/2008 10:22:12 AM
biotech and pharma is down right now as far as expansion goes. new growth and building of new facilities is at an extreme low for this industry at the moment.

I have a biology degree and work for a CRO in RTP. CRO's in the area are really hiring - but with no experience, you just have to find a way to get your foot in the door. http://www.newsobserver.com/business/story/1135350.html

^ that's what i was going to suggest. the whole experience thing is a chicken and egg situation. experienced CRAs make bank. see if you can find a way to become a Clinical Trial Assistant, and move up from there.

Have you looked at one of the state labs? They hire a good many entry level medical lab people (among other jobs).I don't work in the medical part, but there has been several openings recently. I don't currently see any openings though.Where I used to work, Hospira, hires alot of lab people as well. They always have openings. They really suck though (& you'd work 2nd or 3rd shift).[Edited on July 22, 2008 at 1:52 PM. Reason : ]

If I had known, I would've picked chemical engineering.

welcome to having a science degree!!!!11!!!!you forgot an optiongo to grad school and get a degree that gets you a jobthat's pretty much the only option, now or later is the only question

I would try here: http://www.ncsu.edu/epack/

biogen idec's stock just went up like $9-10 in 1 wk. they also have a nice pipeline of drugs.

Have you tried Embrex? They like to hire NCSU alumni.

What kind of experience do you have? When did you graduate? What did you graduate with?I graduated with Poultry Science didn't see tons of options and not make more money working in a chemistry lab. I took a lot of additional chemistry and science tho. Of course, I am still considering teaching because as bad as the world think that there pay sucks it honestly isn't that bad for a 10 month contract.

^I know you took extra classes in "chemistry and science," but you missed the class in expressing yourself effectively.
7/23/2008 2:42:35 AM
^ aha, I wasn't going to say it myself but I was thinking the same thing

Have you looked at Duke in their med school research labs? They are always hiring and have great benefits.
