let's get "What's a labtop?" out of the way

now

can you tell us a little more about the problem? What OS, what program do you use to play movies, etc.

Windows Media center.

It doesnt read it.
I click on the DVD RW DRIVE E and it tells me to insert a disk

does it play / recognize regular cds?

yes. it reads normal cds. I can also copy music cds.

and it's done this with more than one dvd?

This happened to my laptop a couple months ago. The drive hit it's expiration date, got a new one. You can try to rollback/update the driver, and I have heard that nero or roxio services can cause problems like this.
