Yes, that is a Cherry wood weave. Each strand is hand cut and hand woven. Cutting the veneer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyKCWrGAy1UWeaving the veneer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40IRmPV_sXs[Edited on July 21, 2008 at 4:55 PM. Reason : updated working images]

sorry fixed the pictures, stupid blogger
7/21/2008 4:55:42 PM
this will be a sick-looking ride, no doubt. your boy has quite a vision. every other wooden car i have seen so far looked either plain or straight retarded. on top of that, they were also carved and did not show off the versatility of various woodworking techniques like Splinter does
7/21/2008 5:57:24 PM
I absolutely love the Cherry wood weave. It totally looks like carbon-fiber (which I love), but it's wood! I'm very amazed at this man's patients. His quality of work is just astounding to me.

7/21/2008 9:31:00 PM
this should be amazing in the endI prayyyy he uses some kind of clear and doesnt put any paint on it at all
7/21/2008 11:04:10 PM
^it wont be painted
7/22/2008 12:11:44 AM
Hey that's coming along nicely. I can't imagine how long that took to do, it must have been hundreds of hours (if not thousands) on that shell alone. Looks great though!
7/22/2008 1:40:47 AM
7/22/2008 10:09:05 AM
Haha, I want to know what kind of sound system it will have. I mean, he can easily integrate it with eveything being wood and all...Just throw a sub in there. You don't need to make a woofer box for it! You're in one! hahhahahaha.
7/22/2008 10:11:22 AM
Thats badass.
7/22/2008 10:55:09 AM
Noen, when is the proposed finish date? I'd like to see it when it's done.
7/22/2008 11:17:36 AM
7/22/2008 11:25:31 AM
^i see what you did there
7/22/2008 12:11:42 PM
hahaha ^^ nice^^^ I *believe* it has it's first scheduled Tradeshow appearance in late August or Early september, so it's only got about a month of work left.Considering there are now 6-8 people working 12-18 hours a day on it, versus the 2-3 that have been working for 2 years 18 hours a day on it, I think they'll make it
7/22/2008 1:39:33 PM
Any idea if they'll display it on campus somewhere a little bit?I would really like to see the finished product irl.
7/22/2008 2:52:16 PM
^^^^ [old]
7/22/2008 3:11:18 PM
I'm pretty sure all the woodworking companies he sold his soul to will get first dibs.
7/22/2008 6:55:47 PM
he got his own custom furniture company (and i don't mean kitchen cabinets cut to fit by the side of your pantry). This is ultimately a show of his craftsmanship. marketing like whoah[Edited on July 22, 2008 at 7:38 PM. Reason : .]
7/22/2008 7:38:14 PM
can't wait to see this finished
7/22/2008 8:00:39 PM
^^Huh? He got waay more than that, in terms of equipment. A great deal of the techniques he's using/used on the car have never even been tried on/in wood before
7/22/2008 8:14:37 PM
how is that different from what i was trying to say?
7/23/2008 9:31:08 AM
Are these guys based in Chapel Hill? I know someone who knows someone who's helping to design a wooden car. I can't imagine there are too many of these being made.
7/23/2008 9:36:49 AM
boy scouts and high school kids make wooden cars all the time.
7/23/2008 9:49:14 AM
^^^I dont think he'll keep much/any of the equipment when it's done. Unless someone hires him to make another one, pretty sure he's moving on from wood after this
7/23/2008 2:39:37 PM
got wood?
7/23/2008 11:58:35 PM
Haha. As you are driving down the highway for the first time..."I hope this car doesn't break down on us... haha. Knock on..."[Edited on July 24, 2008 at 8:47 AM. Reason : WOOD]

so were they talking about august 20th 2009? or 6 days ago?I can't find anything on their website or google searching... (but then again I could just suck at searching)

http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/f23/splinter-wooden-car-16595/Are the only good ones I've seen yet.http://www.orange.co.uk/cars/picturegalleries/pics/4364_1.htm?linkfrom=hp4&link=hero_pos_2_link_1&article=080822x1500x1herocarstheultimategreenmachinesHas the "World Exclusive". The problem is IWF doesn't allow press photography, and he gave Exclusivity rights to Wood Magazine in the US and to Orange in the UK.I'm sure he will be posting more pictures in the coming weeks. They still have yet to mount the engine or run the electrics

http://www.joeharmondesign.com/innovationsSeating.htmli guess safety is not paramount in a crash. at any speed.
8/26/2008 10:09:26 PM
it's a prototype show car. it's not road legal and will probably never be driven at speed
8/26/2008 10:39:50 PM
i know, i was just shocked to see that their design went against all convention.well, at least the convention that states "any accident you can walk away from is a good one", not "rear end something and have two bloody stumps". looks punishing, in more ways than one.[Edited on August 27, 2008 at 12:12 AM. i don't think that using frames is anything to be proud of
8/28/2008 3:15:16 PM
I didn't. They added that shit long after my work was done (I did the stuff in the right frame)
8/28/2008 4:14:04 PM
I saw this on the cover of a magazine at Lowes tonight.
8/29/2008 9:59:38 PM
its also being filmed for the Discovery Channel

I've learned from wicker chairs that woven wood is a bad idea. that is of course unless you stabilize it with tons and tons of resin

segment in Next World on Discovery about to come on after commercial break.probably a replay, but whatever.
9/4/2008 12:39:26 AM
I am so jealous. It doesn't matter if nothing of specific significance ever comes of this. It's just bitchin. Very very cool. At the very least, I hope someone picks up resin-retained woven cherry as an interior trim option. Gotta be cheaper than carbon fiber and much prettier. Wood trim has stagnated for too long. Also, anyone think that a wood car would have potential in an electric car application? (assuming no Li-Ion batts are used, alleviating those heat/ fire issues...)
9/4/2008 11:14:59 AM
9/4/2008 12:07:13 PM
there are several alternatives with similar or more energy density that could be used on a hobbyist vehicle
9/4/2008 1:28:38 PM
it would have looked cooler like this
9/4/2008 1:48:24 PM
This car looks sthuper!
9/4/2008 2:56:21 PM
Damn! That car keeps getting more and more awesome.Hey Noen, I wonder if I could get some offcuts of that cherry weave (raw material w/o resin) to use on a skateboard or two... I'd make one for the guy in exchange for the material. Only need enough to surface the bottom of a 10x38 board, so a piece 12x40 would do it. Foam core with woven cherry would be tits.[Edited on September 9, 2008 at 12:45 PM. Reason : d]
