long story short i have a girl friend that thinks her newly ex-boyfriend has her computer bugged or tracked. pretty much her and i had a conversation about her relationship the other night, first time we'd talked in quite awhile. I don't know her boyfriend or anyone in his circle, but somehow he knew about this conversation and some of the specifics that were exchanged between us the very next day and went crazy. pretty much she thinks he may have bugged her computer. I'm not in the position to check it myself and google is broken. Any tips or easy ways to check and see if he had planted something on her system? I would put this in chit-chat, and may after i get an answer, but i needed a tech answer before we started talking about what a psycho this guy is.

just tell her to format c:that will take care of anything
7/21/2008 8:37:40 AM
if she's really worried about it tell her to at least disconnect it from the internet (or she can just shut it down) for now until someone can look at it. and have some one who knows that they're doing run scanners on it to look for that type of software
7/21/2008 8:45:38 AM
yeah i know that will rid her of everything, but she'd like to know if he did something or not before hand
7/21/2008 8:57:34 AM
1) disconnect from internet2) investigate3) format, install windows

is she hot?/chit chat

I've heard some of the advanced keyloggers can hide themselves pretty well -- you wont see it in the process list, services, etc.I think the only 100% way to see if its bugged is to use a packet sniffer on a separate computer, on the connection between her computer and the internet.
7/21/2008 9:28:38 AM
I think the far better thing to do is have fun with it.You know that this guy is listening in, say some shit that will drive him crazy.
7/21/2008 9:30:01 AM
yeah, that's exactly what she needs to doobviously it's bugged if he knew explicit details of a conversation he should have known nothing aboutnow, you guys need to have a long conversation about how small this dudes dick is and how great the sex is with you compared to him, etc.
7/21/2008 9:32:21 AM
hahaha that may be a good idea.and yeah, i knew a lot of these key loggers and things are pretty tricky to find. How long would it take someone to plant something on a system? just a matter of plugging in a memory stick and uploading?

i miss something?
7/21/2008 9:53:42 AM
i was wondering the same thing lol
7/21/2008 9:55:02 AM
i'm sorry i just thought that would be funny to see... (my ex just told me how small her current is... i wish he knew)
7/21/2008 9:57:06 AM
yeah you should have some fun with it.but at some point, to confirm it's there, run some scanners
7/21/2008 9:58:15 AM
7/21/2008 10:07:04 AM
call the police?

I think more importantly, you need to look into how and if it's possible to prosecute this ex-bfI'd be way more concerned about her safety than I would be about her computer having a keylogger installed. If he's not willing to let go, that's restraining order shit right there. It's all fun and games until he comes over and gives her a glasgow grin [Edited on July 21, 2008 at 10:32 AM. boot + ass = problem solved
7/21/2008 10:38:52 AM
i dont think its gotten that bad yet. Apparantly there have been some trust issues, yada yada but this was the first time she actually thought he might be watching her. but yea, if she did find a tracking program on her computer then boot to ass would be the only suitable solution.

HE READ THE AIM LOGS SILLY !
7/21/2008 7:00:15 PM
Possibilities:1)he could just have her aim password and have signed on her sn2)she could have lied to you and actually been the one who told him (girls are crazy)3)he is good with computers and hid a keylogger on her computerI would say its likely to be one of the first twoAlso,

hook it up to another computer through ICS, and install a sniffer on the intermediate machine. Easiest way to tell. It'll take you a lot of hit or miss with Anti-spyware/Anti-virus to check it out.
7/21/2008 8:23:47 PM
it wasn't the aim logs because she told me found some conversations we had on those and got pretty mad (i dont know why he is threatened by me, i dont like her like that at all). so after this conversation she said she made sure she cleared all of her logs. that's why i think its a key logger.
7/21/2008 9:13:28 PM
So you've already run hijack this and spybot search and destroy? They're fairly decent at finding shit- you do have to enter your hijack this log into a log analyzer site though.Sure there are sneaky and well made keyloggers and such that can hide from those programs, but if the keylogger is more than 2-3 weeks old there's a good chance the log analzyer sites and spybot's definitions have been updated to include it. After all, if you can download and install the key logger so can the people that update those definitions/sites. [Edited on July 22, 2008 at 2:50 AM. Reason : ]

just out of curiosity, what good would a keylogger do him? if he's an ex, i assume he doesn't use her computer on a regular basis, so how would he even access the logs, unless he also set up some remote desktop access
7/22/2008 9:38:13 AM
yeah that is true. I think he was snooping. The conversation happened thursday, i think they got into it on Saturday. So he probably came over and got on her computer while she was in the shower or something.

^That is what locks on doors are for. It's called breaking and entering, among other things.
7/22/2008 11:50:45 AM
if she hasn't broken off all contact with the crazy guy already, do this:have her put a password on her computer...big step in maintaining security.double check that she not only cleared the logs, but set it to 'off the record' or the equivalent so it no longer logs anything, as that is the most common mistake novices make when trying to secure their aim logs. is the computer a laptop or a desktop, btw? if she has a nicer laptop with a built in webcam, you can snoop onto him as he snooped onto you, and having a video of the ex bf hacking her box/rummaging her room is great for getting that stylish restraining order she never new she needed.]]

windows key + L when you walk away from the computer
7/22/2008 2:29:34 PM
avg will sniff out keyloggers, it happened to me about a month ago i was just randomly looking through my vault and it had a bunch on there, i never even knew they were there but avg got them immediately and quarantined them
