So, I drove to Michigan on Thursday and the A/C worked fine.
I turned the car on today and I have no A/C. Borrowed a near broken lowside pressure guage from Advanced and had a quick reading of 40psi before it broke completely. The setting of the A/C does not matter, or the recirc setting. The engine load increases when the A/C turns on, but I do not hear the compressor kick in at all when I turn on the A/C.

Any advice on what I can do with no tools? I leave tomorrow morning w/ a 14 hour drive to get home.

check fuses - engine bay and cabin.

cursory check of a/c parts - condenser, lines, etc... for road damage.

check the condition of the compressor belt.

could the panel that controls the a/c system have a short? i guess a multi meter is out of reach.

Damn VW and their gremlins.

A/C works fine now. Don't know why it didn't work for a day, at all. Oh well.
Guess it is a happy ending this time.
