The church who rents my space out on Sunday mornings plays this intro song every week that is seriously "Spirit of the Radio" but changed to be about Jesus.

Seriously.

No, seriously.

Um. What the hell happened to those guys?

I just watched Colbert. WHAT HAPPENED to Neil Peart???? I've never seen 'em live, but that was NOT the same guy who was playing on any studio cut I've ever heard.

And I know he's getting old and all, but surely Geddy can still try to pronounce actual words.

Lifeson held his own.

I freakin' love Rush. That was incredibly disappointing. Just awful.

1. Rush was musically awesome and funny on the show.

2. Colbert fucked up Rush's performance with that bullshit at the end--you don't fuck with a song, especially a Rush song.

3. Alex Lifeson has been and continues to be grossly underrated as a guitarist.

4. Concerning the backstage video, it's a good demonstration of why I don't fuck around with Rock Band--or many other video games, for that matter (FWIW, I prefer pool, foosball, and pinball). I mean, why play at something when you can actually play the real thing?

As a drummer, I can see what Peart was trying to do there--for one thing, he was still concerned with keeping time and was trying to get shitty little plastic toys to respond like top-of-the-line, often custom-made drums and hardware. It was all just for fun, but some dumbasses out there that don't know how great Rush is will undoubtedly say, "Rush sucks! They can't play their own song on Rock Band!"

In all this arguing and discussion, I think we're losing track of an important fact here, which is that Rush is a terrible band which ruined a perfectly good episode of the Colbert Report.

They might as well be Canada's ABBA.

i'm sure Colbert blindsided them. Nope, it couldn't have been rehearsed or planned before. I mean, Colbert has never put himself in one way or another inside any of the bands that have performed on his show. That's just not like him

jesus, grow the fuck up. and oh yeah

if you can explain what makes Rush terrible, I might accept the statement. But something tells me you'd have to bullshit through that a good bit.

Rush is/was an extremely musically talented and unique band and I really enjoy them.

^^ i actually don't care about rush. i don't like them, per say, but i don't dislike them. I do like some of their songs.

During a drum solo near the end of the song, Colbert ran out and said something like "Alright, thanks to rush, Good night!", then the guitars started back up and they kept playing, and he acted surprised and said something like "ok then.... I guess they'll keep playing and we'll go to commercial" and he ran off. That was it. BFD
that was followed by a commercial, and when they came back, Rush was still playing and Colbert was at his desk and he pulled out a pillow and blanket and went to sleep. It was obviously planned and rehearsed this way, and the band obviously agreed to it. If hooksaw wants to see a Rush concert, I suggest he goes somewhere besides a late-night comedy talk show.

you can see it near the end of the episode here

At the beginning of the following night's episode Colbert is asleep at his desk and Rush is still playing. He then wakes up as they finish and says something like "Wow that was long!" and then introduces the episode. I thought it was a decent continuation joke.

"I can't believe how many really didn't get it.... it was a great joke!! to make fun of how long the songs are... and for those who are saying that Rush should be pissed for being cut off... they were in on it!! come on... the show is scripted.. they probably practiced it..."

the Colbert staff knew how long Rush was going to play...every second is planned on shows like that. it's not like Rush would go over by that much time and HAVE to be cut off. it was a joke since Rush's songs are so long in the first place. you think he just happened to have a pillow, nightcap and blanket behind his desk?

Well now I'm a sober asshole, and I still say that taking half the show to pay tribute to those grating has-beens did indeed ruin that episode.

i dont know that "has beens" is much of an insult for a band like Rush. one hit wonders or people who are one trick ponies and ride a trend like limp bizkit sure.

Would you have preferred "grating geriatrics who should stick to performing shows where people with bad taste can pay money to see them instead of coming on and gaying up a half-hour of comedy"?

Actually, for once I didn't. I saw a thread called "The Colbert Report." I enjoy the show, so I clicked the thread, and it immediately reminded me of my blind rage the other day when I had to cut it off halfway through to avoid having my eardrums assaulted.

That it's hooksaw turned out to be an added bonus.

if it takes bad taste to listen to some good, creative musicians then so be it.
