Isn't the Pikes Peak race being shut down in the near future? It seems like I remember reading that somewhere.

awesome footage, that's too cool. you must have been stationed pretty high up, those motors are hating life.

makes me even more the gates were closed when colter and i tried to go up last time i was out there. i do have plans to be there for the 09 event though, so it's cool.

did they have anything going on over at the circle track?

We didn't get over to the track, we were like #20 in line at the gate and when it opened at 4am, we drove all the way up to Devil's Playground (12,800 ft) that's DEFINITELY the best place to be. They wouldn't let us go to the top since they needed all the parking for the competitors, and once you drive to the top, they don't let anyone come downhill until the race is finished and all the competitors parade down the hill.

FYI, at 14,000 ft, the air has 50% oxygen level then what's at sea level. So yes, the engines have to be prepared for that, and so do the spectators. I'd come out and stay a couple days before trying to stay at 12,800 ft for the 12 hours you have to be out on the mountain. Luckily I live in Denver so I wasn't affected. The next best spot is Glen Cove which is just below treeline (11,400 ft or so) which should be low enough to prevent most altitude sickness.

Here's the 97MB video (UHQ version of what I posted above):

I forgot to add, that contrary to popular belief, I don't think they're going to end the race once it's fully paved, nearly all the media was talking about how the race will most definitely change... but no mention of the race ending.

Any idea on what the temp was up there? I know it came close to 100 in Southwest Denver Sat and Sunday, just wondering how much of a difference there was...

it was probably ~50'F in the morning (4am), didn't get up to 70'F until about 9am, then around 10-11am it was in the 80's.... but it was still kinda chilly at the top with the wind chill factor. i had my fleece on most of the day, so it probably felt closer to 70'F all day at the higher elevation. the sun was INTENSE though, I can't imagine what the UV factor was that day, probably near 11.

if you go, plan for cold weather, they moved it back a couple weeks because the last couple years it was on the 4th of July and there has been hail, snow, rain, etc...
