OK its getting hot as hell out and i always run with my shirt on.I have a few questions though 1. does taking your shirt off help that much with heat?2. I'm kinda big fella (strong) and my arms rub my sides when i run how do you keep them from chafing if shirtless? Thanks,-Foo1

umm... i have a 6 pack doucheLatissimus Dorsi is large and my triceps rub it and if effing hurts.]

Get some bodyglide or similar for the chaffing. In regards to shirtless, are you going to be running in direct sunlight? If so, I'd keep it on but wear something that wicks the sweat away so you aren't slogging around with a soaked shirt on.Running in the shade I'd go without.

I usually run right around dusk like 7:40 -> 9:00

If your only option is a cotton tshirt, go shirtless.Ideally, get some dry fit shirts though. They can be had at target for like 10 bucks. Second the bodyglide for areas that chafe. It's all about what you feel comfortable in.http://www.amazon.com/BodyGlide-Anti-Chafing-Stick-2-5oz/dp/B00062JDK0

i tend to run with my arms up and out...kinda like a chicken. my cross country coach in high school said if you hold your arms up and out it conserves energy.looks a little funny but seems to work and helps my posture also.
7/1/2008 9:18:47 AM
don't wear a cotton shirt - google why if you need to
7/1/2008 9:21:10 AM
I have good posture and I'm mainly running to burn energy anyway. Thanks for the help though guys i've been running 5-10 miles per day depending on what else i do. Is there any store i can buy that body glide in so i don't have to wait for shipping?
7/1/2008 9:21:39 AM
you should be able to buy it pretty much anywhere like a CVS or walmart
7/1/2008 9:26:25 AM
thanks yall
7/1/2008 9:32:03 AM
i usually run with a shirt on, but i have scrawny arms
7/1/2008 9:34:49 AM
Like i said up until now I've just run in an undershirt and even at dusk i felt close to heat exhaustion last night it sucked my head was throbbing & crap.
7/1/2008 9:56:02 AM
Your head was throbbing because you were dehydrated. It wasn't that hot or that humid yesterday, you should have been fine for 1hr, all other things being normal (ie, not sick, not undertrained, etc). What kind of pace are you running? If you're going on 1hr plus runs in the heat, you should probably figure out some way to get a little bit of water in you at some point in your run, or at the very least be sure to be well hydrated before you start.
7/1/2008 10:00:59 AM
when i ran in HS and college and it was hot, it was always shirt-offI'd have to lose about 30 pounds, though, before you could convince me to take my shirt off now.....
7/1/2008 10:04:47 AM
Friday i did 7.7 miles in 67 min... i haul ass cause i honestly find running boring i'm just trying to get ridicules movie abs for the summer but i found out when i ran with a friend that regularly runs 10ks that my pace is significantly faster than his (but I'm 6" taller too) so i may run a 1/2 marathon or 10k or something sometime just to see how i do.
7/1/2008 10:14:50 AM
yeah, i wouldn't say running for an hour at 8:40 pace is really "hauling ass". It's decent, but not particularly fast. Running alone will not give you good abs. I ran daily for 7 years, and the only time i ever had a 6-pack showing was when I was also lifting weight and doing several ab workouts a week
7/1/2008 10:29:49 AM
tshirt isnt your problemyou should look into something like Fuel Belt or a camelbak
7/1/2008 10:33:15 AM
See "what did you do today" thread plz....I know what i'm doing i have a routine... i've lost 20+lbs of fat and gained back 3lbs of muscle in the past 4 months. 213-> 193->196Well that pace was with my friend in tow and probably 1/2 a mile walking for a cool down. What is a good time for an almost 8 mile run.
7/1/2008 10:42:52 AM
if you want to run any decent times in a 10k or half-marathon, I would definitely want to get closer to 8:00 or into the 7s. of course, for recreational running and just getting fit, it doesn't really matter - 8:30-40 pace is fine.
7/1/2008 10:46:10 AM
When I was training for a 10k I was down in the low 7's (10k in 42-44min). To be fair, that was in the spring and not summer. I think 8:30 is respectable for your distance and your purpose. If you were trying to win races, obviously you'd need to be quicker.
7/1/2008 10:49:35 AM
Well a single mile i run in the 6's i start to run out of steam around the 5-6 mile mark though on longer runs i think a low 8s high 7s in a 6.2 mile run would be possible if not probable. ]
7/1/2008 10:50:49 AM
put your damn shirt on.
7/1/2008 11:02:30 AM
I don't like synthetic shirts. Period. I never have and I doubt I ever will, but that is a personal preference. If you're like me, and wear a cotton shirt, I find I'm actually cooler in a light cotton t-shirt than I am shirtless. I'm convinced it is because the cotton retains moisture and helps my body cool itself better than being shirtless. I'd venture to guess that most guys who go shirtless are just trying to get a tan while they run.
7/1/2008 11:24:27 AM
I'm part Lebanese... i don't need to try to tan long....[Edited on July 1, 2008 at 11:30 AM. Reason : .]

unrelated question - but dont want to start new thread:what running shoes do you like? I've had New Balances for a while, but want to try out Sauconys
7/1/2008 2:24:35 PM
I'm on my second pair of the Asics 2100 series. I love them. I had Saucony Grid something before. But both of those were recommended to me by the guys at The Athlete's Foot in Cameron Village. Different brands fit different people.
7/1/2008 2:29:49 PM
^^ there are 3 shoe threads allready i think But what really matters is your foot shape.. go to a running shoe store figure out the shape of your foot and where your highest stresses are then figure out what model shoe you need..My last 4 pairs of shoes have been "ASICS GT-2120™" Because i was told they fit my foot right... and they obviously do if i can run 30+ miles per week and not have any foot pains
7/1/2008 3:03:22 PM
shirt off, shoes off. and if you're chafing, get some of that bodyglide stuff http://www.bodyglide.com]

I'm more of a cross-training type runner (from yoga, biking, swimming), but I find Brooks fit me best. I had Sauconys in high school when I ran track. I definitely agree with getting fit at a specialty store. I went with a friend to a place back home in PA and we got videotaped while we ran, got an education on how different shoes support the foot, etc. Knee problems diminished with these shoes.

a decent moisture wicking shirt will keep you somewhat cool and will reduce chaffing

If you cant find that bodyglide shit anywhere, just use any kind of tanning oil. You can find that at pretty much any CVS-type/grocery store. Works really well and smells good
7/2/2008 12:03:09 PM
^or you could just go into the kitchen and grab some EVOO

^You're right. Clearly its been some time since I've been there.
7/2/2008 12:51:55 PM
buy some moisture wicking shirts to wear when you're running outside. They work really well at keeping you dryer than if you ran shirtless.Buy one and try it a couple of times first to make sure you don't have an skin allergies.
7/2/2008 12:57:36 PM
^^ no worries. I'm just here to help
