I noticed that my rottweiler was limping. I checked out his paw and found that one of his nails had been split apart ( not completely ). I managed to cut off the part that was hanging off and bandaged him up. I plan on taking him to the vet this friday, since i dont have any cash right now with me and dont get paid til friday. Are there any things I can do to aleviate the pain. It seems as though he doesnt notice it. When i take him out to pee and shit he's aggressive and runs around but when he's walking he limps.

Doggie aspirin? I dunno. I wonder if he's limping because of what caused the nail to split, not because of the split nail (like, whatever he did to get hurt).

if he acts like it doesn't bother him, then i don't think he needs pain medication. don't let him run around like a crazy dog.if you restrict his activity and he still limps and starts acting like it really really bothers him (licking it a lot, not putting any weight on it, etc), then they do make doggie aspirin (chicken or beef flavored, found at petsmart/petco).keep the injury clean and try to make him stop running so much.[Edited on June 30, 2008 at 7:30 PM. yeah but dogs will try not to show pain/weakness. why don't you call up your vet and ask if there is anything you can give him? i think there are some people meds that dogs can use, not sure though..

Make sure you keep it clean and protected from dirt...if it's split down the middle - there's not much a vet can do, with the exception of cutting it above the split to help with pain and lower the effect of infection. They can do that, and cauterize the quick so that it doesn't continually bleed. The vet will most def. put him on a course of antibiotics, and tell you to keep it clean and dry.

you can give him regular people aspirin for the pain but don't overdo it. Since he is a rotweiller and most likely the weight of a teenage human, give him the child dosage. The standard dose of aspirin for dogs is 5mg/lb of body weight (so for a 100lb dog that would be about one and a half standard aspirin) twice a day and should always be taken with food.[Edited on July 1, 2008 at 12:18 AM. one time my dog lost one of his nails and it grew back!

Call the vet first before anyone starts trying to figure out aspirin dosage.

^yes, call the vet.although i thought it was very hard to take too much aspirin.side note: i'm surprised no one said something like "if you can't afford a vet visit, you shouldn't have a dog"
7/1/2008 12:54:47 PM
^Mostly the problem being that aspirin can interfere with other medications that may work better for the dog.

Also make sure you keep it bandaged up so he doesn't re-open it if you give aspirin. Makes them bleed more.

here is a good link regarding dogs and aspirin.http://www.school-for-champions.com/animalhealth/aspirin.htmlike i said, as long as you keep the dosage low as recommended, the dog should be fine. I gave my Rottie aspirin all the time for his hip problems.and sure, calling the vet is the best option. But he said he doesn't have a lot of cash, and I am sure the vet won't recommend giving the dog ANYTHING without having him come in and pay that office visit.

If you can't afford your pet, don't own it.
