I'm playing with cutting our connection down some. Basically we use our internet connection for playing on web, email, and randon Itunes download for couple of shows a month. Is this going to suck using RR Lite 768?

6/24/2008 11:40:51 AM

I've used it for awhile, works fine for basic surfing and email. As long as you can wait for the Itunes to download overnight and don't need them real quick it will be fine.
6/24/2008 1:14:21 PM
I think I'm going to try it for a month and see how it is. Hell, we're going to be on vacation for 2 weeks of it in any case.
6/24/2008 1:33:12 PM
you'll be fine.
6/24/2008 1:52:26 PM
i think the lady at time warner fucked up and gave me that when in actuality i said i wanted standard. not an extremely big deal but i can definitely notice a difference. i just moved though and havent exactly done a lot of downloading or gaming. i would imagine for what youre talking about though you wont even notice much of a difference at all.
6/24/2008 7:43:30 PM
We have it and it is OK as long as you don't need to upload any large email attachments and such. It also has a hard time with CNN videos and the Netflix quality is only standard.

Time Warner fucked up and gave me 768 but was charging me for the 1.5Mbps. Took 3 weeks and a half dozen phone calls to fix it. They finally sent out a repairman, who kept callling his bosses to get it straightened out. Worst experience with a company I've ever had. It seems that half of their employees don't even know the 768kbps lite package even exists.Anyway, 768 was not really adequate. Ten years ago when I was on a 14.4 modem I would have loved it, but that was ten years ago and the web was simpler then. With an ad blocker you could suffer though it. Videos will not stream in real time. Even youtube. You'll have to wait for every single video to download.--------------------------------------------------^^Check your speed here:http://www.timewarnercable.com/Carolinas/products/speedtest.htmlIf it say anything less than 1450kbps download, get ready to call and argue.[Edited on June 24, 2008 at 9:07 PM. i just talked to embarq about downgrading to 768k (to save $10/month). i'm going to try it for a month at least. i use the internet so rarely at home now that i don't think it'll be that big of a deal (hopefully). i sit all day in front of a computer, usually the last thing i want to do at home is sit in front of a computer.i'll let you know how it goes... ^^i've had a similar issue recently and it took one phone call, ~5 mins, and i was reimbursed for all of it. i'm pretty surprised that happened.
6/26/2008 9:59:42 PM
so far, not a huge difference. it takes google maps about 3 seconds longer to generate, but that doesn't bother me.so far, so good
6/27/2008 1:46:33 PM
I'm confused. I signed up and pay for Roadrunner Litemy download is 1476kbps and my upload is 158kbpsthats right, right? Lite 768 is different and slower than regular Lite?nm what i said is right. i consulted the authoritah[Edited on June 27, 2008 at 2:02 PM. Reason : as]

I just upgraded to Turbo for $9.81 a month more. I'm moving in a month so $10 aint gonna kill me.time to get my DL on!
6/27/2008 2:19:42 PM
i have it....it pretty much gets the job done for me but there are a few times i've said "god damn i wish this would hurry up"
6/27/2008 2:22:13 PM
6/27/2008 2:22:54 PM
I was assured the upgrade would be in effect in no longer than 10mins. so ok, i ordered it.An hour later.. still slow. Why am i not surprised?
6/27/2008 3:26:52 PM
Why don't you guys just say I have RR BASIC and avoid the light confusion? (even though they themselves label it as light and light 768)[Edited on June 27, 2008 at 5:10 PM. Reason : .]

comcast had to send i guy to my new place just because i movedtook the same equipment and same level of service but someone had to drive to my apartment and be there for 1.25 hours just to change the billing and service address
6/28/2008 3:20:44 PM
Wow, I had hoped mine was an isolated incident. I'll bet they do this on purpose to shaft customers on a regular basis. Most people lack the determination to keep calling. When you call, press 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0.As soon as you get a real person, explain you've called a half dozen times and need to speak with a manager or the advanced tech people immediately. I found it helped when I asked them to cancel my account as well.[Edited on June 28, 2008 at 4:01 PM. Reason : .]

6/30/2008 2:40:02 PM

6/30/2008 6:24:39 PM
never called back. they said itd be within hours.i called the exec line again this morning. they assured me theyd call me back today.
7/1/2008 9:19:28 AM
yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyfuckers finally called back. fixed it in literally 2 minutes. It was an account end problem. All it took was someone willing to take 20 seconds to listen to me explain the problem and attempt look at a possible solution. amazing.

I tried Qwest DSL, which (out here) was supposed to have ~3Mbps. it was really only about 1 to 1.5 Mbps most of the time.regardless, that's still about twice as fast as your 768kand i tell you, it sucked.and i dont even do anything really "high bandwidth"
7/1/2008 3:25:51 PM
with my 768k service, the only thing really slow is itunes downloads, but i just leave the computer running and go do other stuff. websites are generally fine. worth it to me.of course i don't download much, don't play games online, etc...[Edited on July 1, 2008 at 3:31 PM. Reason : ]

^^^ And they gave you some sort of compensation for all your struggle, right?
7/1/2008 3:34:24 PM
I understood my limits when using 768K... I understood that it WAS 768Kb/s which = 96KB/s max... which is a much more useful measure of Bandwidth... so I knew that when I was trying to DL a 200MB file it was going to take 3.47 Minutes at absolute max speed... and was realistic about it b/c typically it would be 1/3rd that speed...I found it particularly inconvenient to stream class video's but I'd leave them downloading when I left to go do something and then they would be ready when I got back. One thing I found interesting is the Compression on Standard Definition on demand video from the broadcast websites typically did perfectly fine... even though that's a big up-selling point...
