What is it that you want to do? Express in decimal form?

calculate it I reckon, form doesn't matter. I'm just like "wtf" with it.

is it 13log(19), would that be the way to calculate it?

log(19)/log(13) or ln(19)/ln(13)

i think...

ahh ok, so take the number like this and use it as the denominator in log(number)/log(base number).

right?

yes.

you understand that log(x) means a base 10, right? b/c this will work with any base. this would be easier if i had html and could do subscripts.

see: http://www.mathwords.com/c/change_of_base_formula.htm

ok, so basically just change the nonconvential base (in my case it was a 13) to a base 10 log by doing the following.

log13(19) = log1019/log1013
and then that would be just log19/log13
(and then wouldn't the logs cancel each other out to where it would just be 19/13?)

I wrote out the 10s just to be clear about how my brain was processing it.

excel says log base 13 (19) = log(19)/log(13)

log(19)/log(13) isn't the same as 19/13

ti-83 makes it easy. should get 1.14795, but im guessing you need more than just that one number

actually, I wasn't trolling.

I just needed the information long enough to pass the class, which I did. I'm glad ya'll can laugh about me asking shit that related to a class which taught shit that I will most likely not ever use, and if I did, well hey, that's what computers and calculators are for. And if those are broken or in case of an EMP and I really MUST do this RIGHT THEN, then I guess all the math 1337 could be around for hire.

God forbid anyone ask a question in here, of all places.

I gotta say. I'm a fan of natural logs. Those exponents and crap scared the hell out of me before I learned natural logs.

Haha when I was in calc I, my professor was saying how one of the examples he did in class was lim (as x -> 8) = 8. Later on at some point in class, there was a problem lim (as x-> 5), and the student put down a sideways 5 as the answer.

what good is a calculator if you can't use that either?

to all the people giving me shit:

glad you are so *awesome*.

and yes, I will not be using the info from that class I took in my field. it was a sub class, so get off my balls.

I asked the question because I was using the TI-89 for something, and really didn't want to whip out the manual and look it up myself when one of *awesome* math people could've just spit out the answer, so my bad, I didn't really go RTFM there. my bad.

but hey, its all good, I got through a class I didn't really need but was using a sub for another class that wasn't being offered in the summer, and graduated. yay me. plus the job is quite nice. Even better.

so go right on ahead and be all OMG LOL!! about my thread, I just hope that one day one of you will have a question and people will shit in your face over it.

Hmm yeah I meant infinity... I copied and pasted the infinity symbol in there and it looked fine when I submitted it. I guess it messed up though.

8

See that should have showed up as an infinity symbol. It looks like one to me.

^^^

I generally don't ask questions that I didn't have to know the answer at some point in order to be accepted in college.

congrats to you then!

while I may have done that stuff in high school, I don't remember it. Probably because I graduated from HS in 96, so I had some time between HS and college. Not to mention math has never been my strong suit. but hey its ok, because on the internet, everyone's a mathematical genius!!
