Ok i'm serious. No fillet de ferret. I'm getting the husky once i get a yard, but in the mean time these are great pets for apartments. They're descended, fixed, never bitten, litterbox trained, do tricks, sleep 18+hours/day and chase my roommates cats around the apartment and do choreographed fight routines. 2 on the outside are mine. Calvin will do anything for yuengling or guinness.I think they're awesome because they're in the wolverine/badger/otter family and are used to hunt big rabbits in australia and eat prairie dogs in the west. Anyone have ferret pics?

i think ferrets are awesome, but i'm afraid my dog would try to eat it
6/12/2008 3:05:06 PM
^what kinda dog? You'd be surprized. Ferrets get along with almost any animal. You just have to slowly introduce them, and then they actually will play a bunch. My ferrets have had hours of fun with a golden retriever. As long as the dog is well-behaved it'll know better and not hurt the ferret just like it wouldn't bite a human. smaller dog:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paVzqGqPj5cbigger dog:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3oH3TCG23EIt seems like dogs love playing with them. they will catch rodents and eat them though:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMe3jjJuOmQ&feature=relatedIn australia they call rabbit hunting with ferrets "ferreting" because they have tracking collars on the ferrets and they let them loose in a field and the ferrets find the rabbit holes and drag the rabbits out, sometimes breaking thier necks. There's some youtube videos on ferreting.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZrYlZyWDuwI just picked one at random, but go to about 3:20 into the video and you'll see how vicious they can be.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsSVcqWZpHE&feature=relatedholy shit i want a Siberian weasel. That's how my ferrets play. They'll fight really rough and people who first see it think they're actually fighting but it's playing. They love to grab each other by the neck and play mercy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKADopH3qFY&feature=relatedKinda like our cats. They just don't them the cats alone. I'd love to have a ferret or two
6/12/2008 3:42:09 PM
I had two in the past. From 2 months old till they died at the age of 9 years. My brother currently has 4.
6/12/2008 3:44:17 PM
That's what I'm talkin' bout. Now this thread delivers.
6/12/2008 3:50:27 PM
The cats LOVE the ferrets. Whenever i have the ferrets out they come scratching on the door wanting to play. The ferrets usually outlast the cats though and the cats go pass out somewhere. and they loooooove hammocks. I think i have like 5-6 different hammocks in thier big cage. My friend was studying abroad in London for the summer, so this past semester i actually had 4.doin the tongue thing. Calvin, Hobbes, and Otis crammed into a jean leg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bZXBwGuyBk&feature=relatedthey're really sound sleepers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbCBVW28xmo&feature=relatedand vacumming is really fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wkGAxQ0Y3M&feature=relatedthey will do anything it takes to steal shoes. My sister has one that bosses around a 1.5 year old boxer. It's absolutely adorable, but it does hunt mice when the let it outside.
6/12/2008 4:12:32 PM
so are you trying to sell them?
6/12/2008 4:28:24 PM
no, just seeing if anyone else has had good experiences with them. I'll only have 2 now since my friend got back from London.

One of the saddest days in my life is when I had to put my ferret down, and then held her dead body before the vet took her away. And was watching as the vet missed her hart three times before he finally found it for the injection. She was out cold from the gas, but still sucked.

Do ferrets usually stink to y'all? I know they have that scent thing that is supposed to be removed, but all the ones I've ever been around stunk.
6/12/2008 5:59:34 PM
^^^jeez. tumor or something?^here's my thoughts on the matter. They have thier scent glands removed (if you've ever smelled a non-descented ferret they smell like amonia) so they don't smell all that much. Most people keep them in small cages so imagine a cat or dog in a small space for a very long time. Dog/cat pillows and cages usually smell too. As long as you give ferrets a bath every couple weeks or so they don't smell that much. In fact i would say they don't really smell at all up to a week after they get a bath. It's just people who don't bath thier ferrets that have smelly ferrets. I mean think of a person who hasn't bathed in 2 weeks. Much more smelly. People think animals are smelly because we bath every single day (or most of us) but if you bathed a pet (dog/cat/ferret) every day they would be a lot less smelly and dirty than a human because we are exposed to a much more diverse environment everywhere we go, whereas pets usually stay in one place. Another issue is the litterbox. Most people have a ferret litter box in the cage and not covered and this can add to the smell. Imagine if you had a cat/dog litter box sitting in the open. You wouldn't be able to go in the room after a while. So in conclusion as long as you give them baths every few weeks, clean thier litter box, and wash thier hammocks/towels than smell really isn't a problem at all. It's just some people are lazy. If you were to handle my ferrets you wouldn't really smell them at all. Well they would smell like cucumber melon shampoo:
6/12/2008 6:26:36 PM
loved wasting time playing with the ferrets when i ran a pet store, always taught them to jump out of the cage at you when you opened it. spunky lil critters. i would never be able to tolerate the stink of ferret shit or the constant cleanup. fun as hell, but too much upkeep.
6/12/2008 6:33:42 PM

I actually got my first ferret from bottombaby I now have 3 of them and love them dearly! I had up to 5 at one time, but 2 passed due to old age (I adopted them when they were 8 years old). Now I have my Isaac, Frodo, and Snowball.*note - the kitty is declawed, shes not hurting the baby! and trust me, he gets her back, he loves to bite her *More can by seen on my myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/threewingedfury or http://community.webshots.com/album/563415839hnhpOD?vhost=communityAlso on their smell, mine don't smell too bad. I don't bathe them often either, it ruins their skin. When I do bathe them, I use baby shampoo and the cucumber melon shampoo back to back. I also use dry shampoo and deodorizing spray. I also use Bi-Odor which is $30 for a 32oz bottle and I put it in their water, the poo doesn't smell as bad. Sometimes you can tell if you don't change the litter box, but like I said, I had 5 at one time and it wasn't that bad at all. My ferrets are beyond spoiled. I shop ferret.com WEEKLY.[Edited on June 12, 2008 at 10:35 PM. Reason : ]

^^I see you are an astute pupil of Dr. Christopher Mayhorn.Yes inquiring as to the specific location of the said contact lense, I pondered, perhaps my ferret relocated the lense. Placing myself in the perspective of the ferret, or ferritcus hypothalamus, I realized my ferret would hide the lenses in the bathroom, in an attempt to cause the most distress to its master.[Edited on June 12, 2008 at 10:22 PM. annoying pets. ive lived with people that had them and known several people to have them. Even when bathed regularly they smell terrible and the smell permeates throughout the place you live. On top of that, Ive found no redeeming quality to warrant keeping them around as a "pet" but maybe thats just me.
6/13/2008 9:34:55 AM
^you must have had a bad experience because no one really mentions the smell when they're in my room. As long as you keep the cage clean and clean the litter box it's not really an issue. You might have run into some non-descented ferrets. My cousin used to have 2 regular ferrets and the room smelled of urine.
6/13/2008 9:50:07 AM
you're probably right because I dont really know much about them. I just know that even with baths the ferret we had living with us reeked. So we made the guy sell it haha.
6/13/2008 9:54:16 AM
Was it like a urine/amonia smell or was it like a musky dog smell?
6/13/2008 9:55:22 AM
honestly i cant remember. This was over 3 years ago now so all I remember is an unfavorable smell. He has a pretty cool little chinchilla now though
