picked this gem up for $300. i was riding my bike around carolina beach and found this. hopefully i can use this as a good base. put a good motor and call it a day.

I think it needs a steering wheel too.and seats are nice.[Edited on June 9, 2008 at 11:53 PM. Reason : l]
6/9/2008 11:53:26 PM
lol.the steering setup is in it (in the little cabin), just needs to be hooked up.and yeah, seats would be nice.maybe some sparco bucket seats.
6/9/2008 11:57:03 PM
oh man, my wallet hurts for your wallet.
6/9/2008 11:58:41 PM
well i havnt even done anything to it. its at the beach. so all work will be done there.still debating what i should do with/to it.i wanted a jon boat. but i figured id give this sucker a try. it was an ex-husbands boat that was never finished (he took it out of water to re do some of the stuff, then left the state)all fiberglass exterior, the floor looks decent for the age. even that cabin looks clean for the age. man, i hate to say it but that's the definition of a money pit right there. you've entered a whole new territory from jon boats. even if the hull, floors, transom, etc. are in good shape, you're looking at a decent chunk of money and time. just sayin, be prepared. the fact that you're capable of doing the work yourself helps a lot though.on the upside, the old tri hulls are pretty good boats. what brand is it? looks like an old glastron or something...
6/10/2008 12:25:29 AM
the registration said thunderbird on it.yeah. it looks like a handful. we'll see. haha i still want a jon boat.
6/10/2008 12:54:51 AM
You're entering a world of pain, son.
6/10/2008 1:08:24 AM
lol, damn i love that movie...

Mike:850-2865I wonder if I could knock that tower off...or I wonder if it's actually dry up that high.
6/10/2008 9:02:48 AM
you got a damn cabin. that thing is balleryeah i would have just stuck a motor and paint on that thing and call it a day, but all the boat veterans dont think so
6/10/2008 9:05:37 AM
Motors are expensive, and there's way more to a boat than a motor and a hull. That said, looks like a fun way to rapidly drain your wallet.
6/10/2008 9:47:08 AM
Damn, I'm looking for a boat just like that to keep on the lake. Buy 6 of those $10.00 vinyl fold-em-up chairs and screw em down. Throw a little trolling motor on the back and I'd be golden.
6/10/2008 10:26:42 AM
well snap.. ive gotta put the numbers together. see what itll cost in the long run.the lady had a motor for it, but sold it earlier. i dont know why i cant just paddle the thing everywhere. hmm
6/10/2008 11:11:15 AM
two honda motors otta be enough to rip the hull to shreads. meaning its a baller ass boat and cant wait to see progress[Edited on June 10, 2008 at 11:38 AM. Reason : ]

Just get a big leather barcalounger and mount it front and center behind the cabin. You can mount it so it swivels 360 degrees or is stationary. Fab an oar holder on each side and you're ballin on a budget. You'd still have enough room to get in and out of the cabin. Throw a cheap motor on the back if necessary.
6/10/2008 11:26:02 AM
well that the thing. is the cheap motor enough powR?i was thinking a 60HP would be fine.or could i get away with less?anything less = paddles .
6/10/2008 11:39:17 AM
you could hire a couple of slaves to paddle it. isnt that what they did on the way from england

Ok.What length is it? Looks to be about 18 feet to me.What kind of beam does it have? Looks to be about 6 or so feet to me.For boats of roughly that size, an outboard in the 60 to 150 horsepower range will do ok as long as the hull is rated for it, or can handle it. Used outboard motors can be found on Craigslist all the time. If I were you I'd try to find some sort of Yamaha, assuming you will be buying a used one with perhaps a little age on it. It's generally understood by most logical people that a Yamaha Saltwater Series outboard was/is just about the best around for many years.Things may have changed somewhat now, because most everything new now is 4 stroke, but I'm going on the assumption here that you don't want to spend many thousands on a new outboard.Whatever motor you buy, get the model number, horsepower rating, and year of manufacture, if everything else checks out to your eye. Take this info and stick it in Google and see if any weird common problems or stuff like that pops up. With some outboards, you'll be suprised what you'll find.
6/10/2008 12:52:18 PM
yeah, its an 18 footer. thanks for the info D-rake.that was my thing. ive looked on craigslist, a lot of motors are 4 stroke going for like $3000 or so.the motor is the first thing ima look for, if its too much $, ima just settle for my john boat.[Edited on June 10, 2008 at 2:31 PM. Reason : ]

You can pick up a motor from NC State Surplus for less than $1,000
6/10/2008 4:00:07 PM
damn i didnt even think about that. hell yea ncstate surplus is like cl. you can just go and look at shit
6/10/2008 4:03:38 PM
I'm pretty sure he already did iirc
6/10/2008 4:06:38 PM
^^^ Most of those things are burned up or otherwise damaged from what I've heard. The state doesn't get rid of them very often unless they're really not worth fixing. Money pit.[Edited on June 10, 2008 at 4:27 PM. Reason : l]

this reminds me, i've got an older runabout v-hull boat i need to get rid of. Boat needs work (seats, interior) but it has a strong recently rebuilt evinrude 115hp outboard
6/10/2008 4:35:48 PM
lemme get the motor. $100. cash. tonight
6/10/2008 5:35:00 PM
Look at the deck plate (is it has one) and find the Max HP rating. 3/4ths of that is a good rule of thumb for power.
6/10/2008 6:03:08 PM
I have an 86 Chapparal 17' I/O OMC cobra sans trailer for $400. the lower is good the motor is gone, needs a 4.3 chevrolet. you need a long block and headers. all the fixtures are there. the interior needs redoing. trim motor works. I am going to strip it and ebay the lower pretty soon. I just want my trailer back, I built it in shop class and its bad ass.
6/10/2008 6:08:35 PM
^^^ LOL more like 1000+ for the motor
6/10/2008 6:12:00 PM
I paid $1200 i think for my motor, 125hp, just rebuilt, no hours. damn thing is great, like new.but anyway, let me point out that HP rating is going to be secondary to the proper size lower unit for that tri-hull. if its too short, your boat will only go about walking speed but will scream like its going 100mph. ask me how i know [Edited on June 10, 2008 at 6:29 PM. Reason : K dont feel bad dude, a decent boat trailer is $300. Thats what i paid for mine...]
6/10/2008 6:28:27 PM
^i hear yah. yeah, my biggest thing now is pretty much the price of a motor and get it cruising. seats and what not will come later.i was trying to have a max $1000 budget on my jon boat that i wanted to get. haha, i was gonna use the same for this, i actually found a guy who has rebuilt 2 strokers on craigslist. he has two, one is a 1970 for $700 and the other is a '74 for $1000.i forgot what brand each was. but he rebuilds them (has a shop and stuff) and guarantees them running.right now i'm all about cleaning it up and painting it (maybe just the inside) with any supplies i have now, for pretty much free. and from there i'll see how much ill be spending to get it on the water.
6/10/2008 9:58:32 PM
best of luck with your project.... i've just finished phase 1 of my 78 shamrock project (straight inboard ftmfw)... got the damn thing running/usable- ended up costing about double what i had initially budgeted.got it with a busted motor- prev. owner had left water in it over winter and everything was fubar... built a nice fresh 302 from scratch, replaced the exhaust and all the raw water hoses, plus nigged up some duraspark electronic ignition- since you're dealing with an outboard it'll probably be a bit less of a headache, but might get more expensiveGreat Success!
