Is the transmission fluid guy still around? I gave him some money once and he hit me up later with the same story. He got pissed off when I called him on it. That was probably 5 or 6 years ago.

I was at Mission Valley a couple of years ago, and a guy came up to me asking for a few dollars so he could buy some fix-a-flat because he had a flat and needed to get to work.
I told him that I was a mechanic, and that stuff was crap. He told me he already had two cans in the tire and it was still leaking. At that point I told him it would never work and he needed a new tire.
He then asked if I could give him money for cab fare, like $10. I asked where he needed to go and he told me "xxxxx", some italian place near crabtree.
I told him that he could give me $5 and I would drive him there. He said "ok, you can give me $5."
I clarified for him that he could pay me, and he looked at me funny, said no thanks, and walked away.

dude- watch craigslist. you can get a decent $500 car until you figure things out. OR learn to get up early & ride buses. There are ways around-- they are just terribly inconvenient. Riding buses isn't so bad, though. When it was really cold I started riding them when my 626's tranny went out. After I figured out the usual routes, I rather enjoyed not having to worry about traffic & such.

There are plenty of jobs around here within bus/bicycle distance. No one in their right mind is going to loan you a car. No good employer/internship is going to give you the time of day without transportation. Get your shit together first.

you could stop paying for internet and use the money on a payment plan for a ~$800 car. I pay $168/month on an 18k car. make it happen or start suckin dick for spare change

You could take the bus, or buy a bicycle. Kind of lame options, but if you combine a bicycle with a city bus you can pretty much reach anywhere in the area where you could get a job.

DNL if you just need some money for a job and a car, the NCSU Bookstores isn't a bad choice. I mean you can ride the wolfline up to campus and work 40 hour weeks. Pay is crap ($7 or $8/hr), but it is pay. Your best option is to find a job on campus somewhere that you can work 40 hour weeks, then continue to live as conservatively as possible until you have enough money to buy a crappy car, or to put down a downpayment and start making monthly payments on a used car from an area dealership. From there, just maintain a job during the semester working 15-20 hours a week and you'll be fine. The bookstore was pretty good for a semester job, but be careful if you work in computer connections & school supplies if you have allergies (they had a mold problem that basically made me sick as hell so I had to quit because I didn't have a solution at the time). You can work 6 hours on saturdays at the bookstore and then work two four hour shifts during the week and be golden (AND you'll get free textbooks). I figure this isn't a bad short-term option for you, you still live off avent ferry rd, right?

You're going to have to end up doing a local job for now if you don't want to waste a lot of time on the bus, and NCSU campus is about the best place to look.

not without a sizeable down payment or trade-in, you don't.

figure $100 per $5000 financed for a 60-month loan (this obviously varies a little with interest). even if you took a 72-month loan on an $18k car (which would probably be a dumb idea to begin with), you'd pay more than $168/month.

that's like saying i pay $0 per month for my truck, because my down payment was equal to the purchase price.

yeah, huge down payment, but the fact remains, basic transportation can be had for VERY little per month. my roommate's sister has focus for something like $75/month with 1k down. the market is so bad for cars right now, especially older ones with below average mileage, I've seen used car dealers offering 72months on ~3-4k cars with ridiculous down payments like $100. that comes out to about the cost of high speed internet each month (~$60).

also, I've worked at the bookstore. summer time is about the absolute last time you'd ever want to work there, especially in the computer section. I started at $9.50/hr years ago and I don't think you could pay me enough to ever work there again.

ok here are the options from my perspective

a) fix up my bike and learn to take the buses everywhere
b) find some cheap car to get
c) get a scooter/crotch rocket

a) is the most lame cause it'd probably add about 2-2.5 hours a day(rode the bus once and it took forever just to get to north raleigh)

b) i dont really know shit about cars and also i figure the reliability for a 500 dollar car isnt that great, plus i'd want to get something good on gas and i doubt i could be that picky when the car is 500 dolla

c) i like this idea cause its prolly the cheapest plus they get good gas mileage, but riding a scooter is like fucking a fat chick so idk...

option A until you earn enough money to buy a cheap car, then option B.

you do not need and cannot afford a crotch rocket of any variety.
