Do you have any reference material on that program?

they do the same thing in east raleigh. to try and keep the neighborhoods from being gentrified by white transplants. it happens anyway
6/3/2008 2:45:58 PM
so what is this? ensuring affordable housing exists for certain segments of the population?
6/3/2008 2:48:51 PM
^Sounds like it.^^Isn't that basically self-enforced segregation? I mean, I know that 'gentrification' is a touchy subject and there are a lot of negative opinions on it, but I'm still a little lost as to how something that causes run-down homes to be restored and property values to go up is a Bad Thing.
6/3/2008 3:35:24 PM
because it destroys the history and character of the neighborhood.case in point: 5 points in Raleigh. It went from old, working class traditional neighborhood to a gentrified upper-middle class hip area over the past 5-7 years. Now the original homes are all being torn down (1930's to 1960's bungalows and sub 1500sq homes) to build 4-6000 sq ft McMansions and multi-resident townhomes. In another 5-10 years the whole area will be ugly huge audacious houses that no one can afford.

Oh, you're talking about teardowns. I fucking HATE teardowns, and I'm in favor of any ordinance that will regulate that sort of thing (as I think is under consideration by the city council). I guess I was saying that, at least in my book, restoration of original houses brings about good results.

"Whether a man wants to build a clubhouse for his children or a bridge -- travel for a vacation or build a railroad from coast to coast -- pour a bowl of cereal for himself in the morning or prepare fois gras for paying customers -- that man must be free from the forcible interference of others to do so"Your government doesn't think you have a right to your own life and property, that's how it's legal.

^^^ it isnt just tear downs, a lot of it is ridiculous additions too. Adding 3000sq ft to a 1200ft house just looks retarded.^^I'm not talking about the surrounding areas to 5 points (mostly shitty 80's homes it looks like), but definitely feel free to correct me, I can only speak about the 5-10 block radius that I've witnessed over the past 5 years or so
6/3/2008 10:40:14 PM
^^^, that might be on 0.5 acres, or 0.2 acres, or 2.9 acres. it looks like the owner just didn't fill in the field.

^^^^You may not realize this, but we don't live in a bubble or in the middle of no-nothing nowhere'sville montana. The shit you do to and on your property affects the life and livelyhood of those around you, so hell yes they get a say in it.And for this discussion, it's private business selling property, they can set whatever restrictions they want on the sale.[Edited on June 3, 2008 at 10:51 PM. 5 Points is going to complete shit with Oakwood following close behind. My neighborhood, 40s houses, is now being taken over by ridiculous looking McMansions that have minimal recesses from the streets. It is starting to terrible and I wish the city would do something to actually protect the historical neighborhoods of Raleigh better.

every time i drive around druid hills, there is some new house > 5000 ft^2 that is on about .2 acres it just looks stupid

Drewry? And as for the theme of the thread - nobody's stopping anybody from living in a crappy house by building nice ones, there's a ton of run down places to buy if that's what you're in to[Edited on June 4, 2008 at 1:57 PM. Reason : df]
