yeah so i have a bad CV joint that i need diagnosed and repaired (since i'm not sure if a new boot is all it needs or what), can anyone recommend a good mechanic in the campus area?also, what would this typically run price- and time-wise? (02 monte carlo if that 's relevant at all)

If you've never pulled off front suspension/drivetrain before, I wouldn't say it's "so easy it hurts" , not that it can't be done for a first timer though...

if the boot has a tear that is fresh, like it just tore today, then get a new boot for half the price of a new CV joint.if the boot has been torn for a while and the grease is contaminated, then replace the thing with a reman. unit.$200 for one cv joint (not sure if it's inner or outer).

I just replaced 2 axles, because the CV joints were leaking. With the prices of new axles, its not worth the extra effort of repairing the joints.....assuming the new axles are good quality.

^^Yes, just ask around at a few places to see who's the cheapest, there's a lot of independent/cheaper repair shops near the S. Saunders street area. Try Gower's.

FYI as to costs for the job.....I got my axles for $70 brand new. I can rip out an axle and replace it in about 1-2 hours, without a full lift. That should give you a pretty round estimate of the job cost.I would fully expect the garage to charge you for at least 3 hours of labor[Edited on June 4, 2008 at 11:43 AM. Reason : .]

they will indeed

^^keep in mind you're probably talking about remanufactured axles, not new.

depends on the car, i just did a mazda 6 that was only available through the dealer, 2 months out of warranty, try $340 on for sizecarquest, t-hoff, carolina motor parts, autozone, oreily, adavnce and couldn't find it online, some axles arent that damn cheap

i'm just doing it through the dealeri'm gonna get screwed over on price, but fuck it, at least i know they can do it

2 boots + 1 bearing + 1 alignment = 1 grand [fail]oh well, fuck it

1 new shaft + 45 minutes of work in the driveway = $100

that's the plan next go-around
6/5/2008 10:32:19 AM
well for that much money it should do the work it self next time. this set should last the rest of the time you own the car
