So flying to China via NWA and have been trying to figure out how many Ibs I can bring per bag,

Their website claims 70

But I wanted to make sure so I called their customer service, they told me 50, well, 1 guy told me 70, then this other girl told me 50 and this last lady had no clue and told me to go to the website. I called 3 different times and got 3 different answers.

So I am not exactly sure?

i retract my statement. you can do up to 2 at 70 lbs unless you have an 8+hr connection time, then 1 bag. i dont know how they will handle it if you have to travel domestic and then international.

I flew to Shanghai via Northworst in fall of 06. Let me share with you my experience, or my friend's experience, rather.

My friend and I were going to visit his brother, but he had more vacation than I so he left a week earlier. I got an email from him 2 days after he left asking if I could call his brother to say "sorry I wasn't at the airport, if all goes to plan I will be there at x date and y time".

The flight connected in Tokyo, but there was a big storm so they circled for a while but were forced to land at another airport. They were stuck on the plane (turned off at this point, so no air conditioning) for a couple hours until they decided to put everyone up at a hotel 1 hour's drive from this airport. Sadly, they did not have enough rooms available so they randomly assigned complete strangers to stay with each other in some sketchy hotel room.

The next day, he gets on a bus to go back to the airport and proceeds to wait in line for 12 hours (no exaggeration) to try to find out how to get to Shanghai from here. This small airport had opening and closing hours, so people who didn't make it through the line had to get back on the bus, go back to the airport, and try again tomorrow. Fortunately, my friend got a flight to some other airport, then to Shanghai. But it left very early the next morning, so he had to sleep on the airport lobby floor that night because the bus wasn't coming back early enough.

He eventually got there, but it took 3 days instead of 20 hours. My flight was nothing close to that atrocity, but on the way back we did have delays of no less than 2 hours at each connection. My friend was too lazy to file a complaint and didn't really want any free vouchers to fly with them again, but Northwest should have done something without being asked. I will never fly with them again. If you can't get a straight answer about the weight limit, good luck with getting there.

100 lbs is the max, with a charge. It's usually 50lbs for Trans-pacific flights. They're all cocksmokers about it now.

^^^ I believe my post was far more relevant than yours my point was, northwest sucks and if it's not too late, it might be worth it to pick another airline.

anyway, i was there for 11 days and had one bag + carry-on, and neither bag was over 40 lbs. i can't imagine needing/wanting to lug around 70+ lbs.

^ AGREED. Northwest is horrible for trans-Pacific travel. I flew them to Tokyo back in 2006. The flight attendants were rude and they ran out of meals on the flight. Yes, that's right, they somehow managed to not have enough meals on the plane for everyone. I was one of the people that got jipped on the meal, with no sort of compensation

When we got to Tokyo, it turned out they had lost the luggage of about 100 people on the flight. I don't even know how you misplace that much luggage. These were mostly people doing the same orientation as me in Tokyo. Northwest was woefully rude about the entire situation. They offered no sort of compensation to people who now had nothing in the way of clothing, among other things. They didn't find the luggage until four days later, then tried to charge the people for shipping it out to their hotel.

Since that experience, unless there is a huge difference in ticket price, I have paid for a more expensive ticket rather than fly NWA.
