In nearly all other respects, my dogs are very well trained and obey me. Unfortunately, one of them is a barker (mix rescue, probably sheltie/jackrussel). She constantly barks at the neighbors if they are outside and people passing by on the street. Both of my dogs are primarily inside dogs but I do like to let them out and get stuff done for several hours every day.

I have tried everything I have heard and read and nothing seems to work with her. In fact, when I am outside with her, she won't make a peep. She will only start barking when I go back inside. I take both of the dogs on frequent walks and I am constantly exercising them so I don't think it's just an energy problem. They are also pretty well socialized and spend some time at doggy daycare with other dogs and people. I don't have any problems with her barking if I am around.

I am now looking into purchasing a bark training collar. At this point, I have seen the collars that make the high frequency noise and the shock collars. Does anyone have any experience with either of these or a specific brand that works? Also, if you have any other ideas for training her to stop barking at the neighbors all the goddamn time, I am open to that as well.

I listed some of them. I socialize the dog as much as I can and I make sure that she is not just sitting in the backyard all day. I mean, she is rarely out there for more than 45 minutes at a time.

I also have used other training techniques like shaking a bottle with rocks in it or whistling to get her attention. She will always stop if I do this, but after about 5 minutes she will be barking again, particularly if the neighbor is outside or near the fence.

To be honest, she never really barked at all until I took her to the kennel for a weekend and she apparently learned some bad behaviors from them.

My grandmother used the shock collar on two of her dogs. One was for barking and the other was for a dog that liked to chase cars. Barking dog stopped barking. Chasing dog figured out that when the collar was off to be recharged he didn't get shocked, so would instantly go chasing a car as soon as the collar was taken off. Now why my grandmother didn't put two and two together on this I don't know, but I'm sure you can figure out how this dog met his early grave

i would go with the noise collar or there is also a citronella collar. i posted about this in another thread awhile back. don't remember what it was called. but shock collars can cause even more damage to your dogs behavior if you aren't EXTREMELY careful and some vets don't even recommend them so i'd just do a little research on it or ask your vet what they recommend. but i'd try the noise or the citronella one.

when she is outside w/o you is she in a fence or just chilling or on a chain or what?

My brother uses a collar that sprays water in his dogs face when we're out in public. He's got a great Dane and he's definitely one of the better behaved dogs I've seen. The collar has helped a lot with parking and jumping on people etc.

yeah she is in the fenced in backyard.. no chains or ropes tying her up.

I read about the citronella and sound collars. I will try one out and see if it helps.

yeah, thats a good method and it works when i am near her. unfortunately, she usually barks at the back edge of my property and when i hear her and come outside she stops immediately.

Dogtra yapper stopper.

The collars that beep first and ramp up are useless. Dog will stop barking before they get shocked then start again in a few secs when it resets.

The HSUS and vets are against electric collars because they have no idea how to use them and are too stupid to figure it out. I bought the dogtra based on the suggestion of a couple of trainers that compete on the national/international level. I'm not stupid enough to listen to vets and humane societies for training advice; I'll listen to the people that have proven they know what they are doing. I was happy with the dogtra and when my dog died I sold the collar to an animal control officer for use on her own dogs. Some dogs just like to bark and will not be deterred by a tap on the head or whatever BS the HSUS suggests.

A jack/sheltie isn't going to be stopped easily. I'd suggest going with a good collar, they are worth the money. Anything you can get at petsmart is pure junk.

put nickles in a soda can and cover the top with tape. shack the hell out of it when he barks. that'll scare him enough to stop barking for at least a week or 2. i personally guarantee it!
