so since my summer consists of little more than work and play, i'm going to go into the depths of insanity and beat all of the past games of each year from the past 20 years. here is my list:

1987- The Legend of Zelda
1988- Contra
1989- River City Ransom
1990- Super Mario Bros. 3
1991- Super Castlevania IV
1992- Zelda: Link To The Past
1993- Mega Man X
1994- Final Fantasy VI
1995- Vectorman
1996- Super Mario 64
1997- Goldeneye 007
1998- Metal Gear Solid
1999- System Shock II
2000- Perfect Dark
2001- Halo
2002- Metroid Prime
2003- Wind Waker
2004- Half Life 2
2005- Resident Evil 4
2006- Gears of War
2007- BioShock

i really don't want to include more than one RPG otherwise this will take forever, but I'm sure I missed a few. give your opinion

For me, I would have Call of Duty 4 in 2007, hands fucking down.

Also, I would've probably done God of War in 2005

^ agreed

I find myself not wanting to invest in buying new games. I will only buy a game if its one of the best games of the year. And I have fallen out of love with console games. The only thing I have played that I could buy would be COD4 for the multiplayer.

I cant get over how much more I enjoy PC games.

To go into detail with this threads topic would take to much time....so I wont

I'm tying to finish up all the console games I still have before I purchase a new system.

Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts 2
God of War 2
Final Fantasy XII
Contra: Shattered Soldier
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Jak 3
Okami
Bully
Final Fantasy X-2
Psychonauts
Lego Star Wars 1 & 2
Dragon Quest VIII
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Yakuza
Marvel: UA
Devil May Cry 3
ICO

In other words I can't wait to see what the PS4 can do.

Ocarina of Time was released in 1998. It should easily replace MGS, but it were up to me I'd have the MGS series as the most overrated game series of all time.

god of war was an AWESOME game, but it was like 7hrs long. resident evil easily was 4x that long for one playthrough so it gets the nod.

I do realize that Ocarina of Time came out in 1998, but since I already have 3 other Zelda games on that list (really, they're all so damned good), I wanted to give MGS a chance.

Seriously, come up with some game's I'm missing. Surely something else that kicked ass came out in 2003.

Call of Duty was released in 2003. That was a pretty awesome game, and a bit of a breath of fresh air to the ww2 game genre

Warcraft II was released in 1995. Also, Starcraft, hands down the best RTS ever was released in 1998.

Having to pick one Zelda game...you definitely made the right call. Link to the Past is definitely my favorite.

And yeah beating Punch-Out might take you all summer, haha.

while punch-out is a fine game, there is no way it was better than:

Final Fantasy
Maniac Mansion
Street Fighter

GTA III would have to beat out Halo. (I don't think it does)
VC Metroid Prime. (maybe)
SA HalfLife 2. (again, I don't think so)

i was thinking about replacing Metroid Prime with Vice City solely due to the fact that I have Super Metroid for 1994. Or should I replace Super Metroid with Sonic 3 & Knuckles? 2003 I'm thinking of picking F-Zero GX just to have a racing game on there. 1996 possibly Super Mario RPG. What about 1990? Suggestions?

And for the record, I'm not going to beat Mike Tyson because not only would that take up a good chunk of summer in itself but possibly my sanity. I'm going to finish Macho Man and then it's over.

Don't take Super Metroid off, that is one of the best games on the SNES, and in my opinion THE best non-linear side scroller ever made. I think in terms of SNES games, it's ranked third behind Chrono Trigger and Super Mario World based off of gamerankings.

Viewtiful Joe, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, or KOTOR for 2003.

You really really should have Ocarina of Time on there, even though MGS was a landmark game. Between the two however, I'd say OoT holds up better. The series evolved so much from MGS to MGS3, that going back and playing the original is extremely painful. I'd put MGS3:Subsistence for 2006 and put OoT in 1998.

Try this for 1996, lots of great choices,

would you put it above Zelda: Link to the Past? Some of these games being suggested are really good games and could go on a "best games, regardless of year" list, but they're not necessarily better than the game already listed for that given year. It's all subjective anyway, so if you got an argument for a certain game no harm in making it.

meh, I'd put Castlevania: SOTN way above Goldeneye as a single-player game.

Goldeneye was the first console FPS to really nail a fun multiplayer experience, but Symphony of the Night has to go down as one of the greatest 2D platformers ever made.

Yeah, it definitely wins in single player. I just know I've played more hours of goldeneye than I probably have any other game, but I guess time spent playing does not necessarily make it a superior game.

i personally think oblivion is better than GOW too, but whatever. gow was technically impressive, but multiplayer was only alright and single player was short.

you need to cut out this "that series is over represented" shit. if it was better than other games that year who the fuck cares if it is on the list in other spots. that just means that company/game maker is doing a damn fine job, or the other games that year are shit.

maybe, but i dont think prime was better than every game in its year, nor do i think windwaker was.

[Edited on May 19, 2008 at 11:00 PM. Reason : nm, prime came out during a pretty dry year.]

I still contend that Starcraft should replace MGS for 1998. I believe MGS was the first game in the "stealth" genre, and had an unprecedented storyline/cutscenes, but Starcraft set the benchmark for it's genre. It can still be considered the best RTS game on the market in terms of gameplay and balance, and it's a decade old. The amount of people who still play the game online to this day should be a testament to it's excellence.

ussj, you make a point. I really don't feel like playing through Vice City again, so Super Metroid says at 1994 and Metroid Prime at 2002. Here is the list:

1987- Mike Tyson's Punch Out
1988- Contra
1989- Mega Man 2
1990- Super Mario Brothers 3
1991- Super Castlevania 4
1992- Zelda: Link To The Past
1993- Doom
1994- Super Metroid
1995- Chrono Trigger
1996- Super Mario RPG
1997- Goldeneye 007
1998- Metal Gear Solid
1999- System Shock II
2000- Perfect Dark
2001- Halo
2002- Metroid Prime
2003- Viewtiful Joe
2004- Half Life 2
2005- Resident Evil 4
2006- Gears of War
2007- BioShock

I've beat Punch Out and just finished Mega Man 2........games sure have come a long way. There's a lot of bullshit in Mega Man 2 now that I didn't notice in the past, but the soundtrack is killer. Punch Out is great no matter how you look at it.
