I ask because my mom lives in an area where the HD service is not yet implemented, however she does have an HDTV (she bought it expecting to get the HD channels, but did not find out until AFTER she bought the TV that the HD service was not available in her area yet) and has the cable running through a coaxial cable, and if an HDMI cable would make it look any better I will buy her one. I have tried to Google, but I can't find exactly what I am looking for. Please help, thanks!

can she not get DirectTV or dishNetwork? I don't know for sure but I would assume any where that directTV is available so are the HD channels.
5/15/2008 6:50:32 PM
HD service isn't implemented? HDMI alone isn't gonna do shit probably.. she can get over the air local HD channels with just an antennaalso, directv and dishnetwork are both probably available and will have HD channels
5/15/2008 6:54:01 PM
^I'm guessing if she doesn't have HD cable available then there probably isn't anything within range of her home with over-the-air hd.
5/15/2008 7:00:36 PM
All I want to know is if an HDMI will make regular cable channels look any better.
5/15/2008 7:15:31 PM
"garbage in, garbage out"
5/15/2008 7:32:08 PM
What influences your answer?
5/15/2008 7:35:44 PM
logic. If you have a shitty source to begin with there is really not much you can do to make it better.I've tried the same thing back in the day too and the picture really didn't improve all that much[Edited on May 15, 2008 at 8:19 PM. Reason : .]
5/15/2008 8:18:50 PM
basically, you can't improve the picture (as stated above)...all you can do is minimize degradation between the source and the display and i really don't think the HDMI will make a noticeable difference (though i daresay that it is, technically, better)
5/15/2008 9:13:39 PM
Im trying to figure out where the HDMI cable would go still. You use coaxial from the wall to the TV it sounds like...where the fuck would an HDMI cable go? Even if you have a digital cable box you didnt mention, if theres no HD service, I seriously doubt they gave you a box with an HDMI port.
5/15/2008 9:35:33 PM
^ Jesus, do you really think that I am that stupid?
5/15/2008 9:37:04 PM
^ Based on your previous responses, yes.
5/15/2008 9:47:15 PM
^ i have to agree.. you really think you're going to get a reasonable increase in picture quality from a fucking cable when you have a shitty video source to begin with?think again.
5/15/2008 9:54:07 PM
^^^I just want to know where youd put an HDMI cable...how you would connect an HDMI cable to a coaxial output.

I am shocked that any reasonable person in this thread would actually think that anyone posting in this thread has no idea between coaxial of HDMI cable inputs, or whether or not a box was outfitted with an HDMI output or not. Thats not even an insult of another intelligence, its actually a reflection of your own broken thinking. I asked one simple question - Do you think an HDMI would improve picture quality over (as in better) a coaxial cable, no matter how so, yes or no. [Edited on May 15, 2008 at 10:34 PM. Reason : cable]
5/15/2008 10:30:17 PM
So, what's your setup?
5/15/2008 10:34:04 PM
Take a very wild guess.
5/15/2008 10:37:03 PM
Nah, sitting back and watching you try to get answers out of people you're insulting is far more entertaining.
5/15/2008 10:41:21 PM
Well, I gave up when the ignorance started to spew. So I am just trying to get this thread locked/deleted/ or whatever so the ignorance can't continue here.

Just think for two seconds how could one have an HD box in there home and not have HD service... just think... that dim flicker in your brain just might light up brightly. With that said, I'll go else where were grow-ups answer questions and not children. But, thanks to all that gave a serious reply, really I mean that.

I guess a DVR box doesn't allow HD channels to pass to the screen, if there was HD service.
5/15/2008 10:52:23 PM
One of my girlfriend's cable boxes has an HDMI output on it and she doesn't have the HD package. It's an HD box, too.]

I would love to see the faces of the self-owned in this thread, LOL.
5/15/2008 10:59:14 PM
One more thing:
5/15/2008 11:09:05 PM
If you didn't think it would why did you create the thread? It just makes you look like a dumbass.
5/15/2008 11:13:21 PM
BOY, YOUR READING COMPREHENSION FAILS BIG TIME IN THE THREAD WITH EVERY POST YOU MAKE. HAHA.DO YOU REMEMBER READING THIS:
5/15/2008 11:18:06 PM
Show me a thread where someone had a serious discussion to the question that I am asking in this thread.
5/15/2008 11:20:26 PM
so you didn't think before creating this thread, huh?

In your first post, you say "has the cable running through a coaxial cable"...I think most would infer that you have a coaxial cable running directly from the wall to the TV from that.So you have an HD box apparently...congrats...that means either you have some crazy cable provider that somehow supplies HD boxes with no HD service, or you bought an HD TiVO/other brand DVR yourself. In the first, Id be willing to bet the HDMI ports are inactive, and in the second, why the fuck would you buy an HD TiVO without doing a little research into it, ie finding out if it will even work with your cable provider.[Edited on May 16, 2008 at 8:56 AM. lol.. first google search response:

I was going to leave this thread alone, but I want to come back just to point out more self-ownage:
5/16/2008 11:32:41 AM
the only one getting self-owned is yourself. You asked a kind of reasonable question (to which the simple answer is "no"), then when people started asking perfectly legitimate questions, because your question as stated was incomplete, you went off the deep end. Nobody in this thread except for you has made an invalid point
5/16/2008 11:40:04 AM
If the answer to the base question is no, no matter what else was involved or left empty, that should have settled it and no other questioning was needed. Irregardless, if I even had an improper set-up, if the answer was no, thats all I wanted to know. You remember in SAW how Jigsaw told the officer to follow the rules and he would get his son back, think about this way, I asked only ONE question in my original post that only needed one answer, and look at it now, likewise look at what happened to the officer. This is how wars or mayhem is started.[Edited on May 16, 2008 at 11:48 AM. Reason : how]
5/16/2008 11:44:42 AM
so what you're saying is..... you're going to kill us all?
5/16/2008 11:50:41 AM
Nope, I am saying if we all we countries, I would have got bombed for nothing. Thus leading me to defend myself.
5/16/2008 11:51:32 AM
no, you would have gotten questions back to you to clarify the situation, then you would have lobbed an ICBM in response to the questions
5/16/2008 11:52:59 AM
You seem to still forget that I only asked ONE question.
5/16/2008 11:54:44 AM
i thought you were leaving. why are you still arguing
5/16/2008 11:58:36 AM
You do seem rather reasonable, so I decided to stick around and exchange post with another level-minded person for a bit.
5/16/2008 12:03:36 PM
is english not your first language? you talk a lot like a chinese immigrant.
5/16/2008 12:14:32 PM
I agree haha. its not the worst I've seen but I was wondering the same thing.
