is there any cheaper alternative to this for multiple animals? i need to have 4 kittens and 1 mother altered. story is, a cat around my office keeps having kittens. i'm putting an end to it after this litter. i'll do it if i have to, but $100 is a lot out of my pocket for animals i'm not even keeping. i've already got a kitten from one of her previous litters, as does my cousin or we might would take more. i'm definitely just going to leave the mother there as an outdoor cat, she obviously does fine. not sure what to do with the kittens after they're fixed. maybe the same thing unless i can find people to take them easily.

you can only have 4 animals altered with the $20fix - but what you could do is have 4 of them fixed through that program (if you make under 20k per year or youre on state/fed assistance programs) and then post them on craigslist with a rehoming fee to cover the fix - rabies shots are included with the $20fix so thats also a plusim sure you can find loving families for them on CL if they're fixed and people will be willing to pay 20-50 for animals that are fixed

cool. you just always hear about there being so many animals needing adoption, does cl really work that well? a secondary question is this... they are approaching 8 weeks or so in age. her past litters have all but disappeared by week 9. so, i want to go ahead and catch/tame them this week. the problem is, i can't keep them inside due to concerns of my other pets. what's going to be the best way to keep them hanging around until i get the vouchers? just food? should i bother with collars/tags?
5/13/2008 7:35:02 AM
well sometimes you can find a lot of bad apples on CL - I've adopted a chinchilla off of there and it died 2 days later, which broke my heart - but then again, I've adopted out animals that I've found on the road that needed good homes and the people have taken care of them and kept in touch with me - just try to screen the people that you give the animals to, like go to their house and check out the condition beforehand, or get them to sign a release form or have a vet signature to prove that they will take care of the animal - of course theres always a chance that people will get rid of the animal, but hey, trying is tryingas for keeping them close, thats a hard question - you could always try kitty carriers at night time but i dont know about day time - food isnt going to keep them there if they find other animals that roam, collars aren't going to help either - i had a cat that is fixed and id had her about 2 years and one day she just took out the front door and i havent found her since, and trust me, she loved our family more than anything because she was beyond spoiled - she even slept with me and my husband, she just got the urge to take off i guess

yeah, i'm not worried about keeping them around forever... just long enough until the vouchers come through. is there anyway to expedite the voucher service? or maybe even someone here that would be willing to fostor them until it's time (2-3 weeks i would guess?). i just don't have the time or resources to bring them into my home with other pets.

Take the kittens to the SPCA. They always get adopted super quick and then you don't have to worry about paying to fix them, weeding through people, and all that. You can make a donation when you drop them off if you want. Then you only have to pay $20 to have the mom fixed, and you are done.
5/13/2008 7:58:35 AM
the vouchers can take over a month to get - I actually didnt get one a few years ago that I was expecting so I had to reapply for one - if you cant keep them until then you may just want to go ahead and put them on CL and explain your situation - you may find a foster family or rescue, or you may find some families for them - just make sure you post a picture because thats what grabs their attentionor ^ is a great option, we dont have a local SPCA where I live, just an animal shelter, so I didn't think about that[Edited on May 13, 2008 at 8:02 AM. ^^awesome... excellent idea. i just wasn't sure if the spca welcomed situations like this, i always assumed they wanted to be people's last resort? i.e., i CAN probably work this out myself, it's just not convenient. they never kill, right?are you saying the spca will do the mom for $20 if i bring the kittens there/make a donation, or you mean just for the animalkind deal...?[Edited on May 13, 2008 at 8:02 AM. well, i would really like to keep the mom around there if possible. it's obvious she enjoys it, and has considered it her home for 4-5 years. she doesn't seem to want anything to do with humans, but we haven't attempted to interact with her much. she's also been excellent for keeping the rat/mice out of our storage building.unlike her previous kittens, the mom always stays around so i could wait on a voucher for her before capture. my concern would be her getting pregnant again in the meantime.

the POP van is the same thing as the $20 fix - Pet Overpopulation Patrol is one of the programs that covers the $20 fix - they are the only ones in my area who cover it, and they have been great with my animals. I have a chihuahua that hates everyone but me, but somehow they kept him calm while he was there
5/13/2008 8:57:10 AM
maybe i'm the asshole, but i'd just have them put down.
5/13/2008 9:47:25 AM
ok maybe i wouldn't.
5/13/2008 9:54:40 AM
That's good to know. I haven't used the POP van myself but have heard good things and was amazed at the difference in the incision size between the vet I used to work for and the vet that spayed my dog (she was 1/2 private practice, 1/2 animal shelter vet). Looked like a plastic surgeon did my dog's spay in comparison to what I was expecting. I'm a spay/neuter clinic convert now.

okay, so i caught the mom and one kitten this afternoon. i haven't gotten an answer at the spca. anyone have any other ideas?? i'm just going to have to let them go and try again another day if i can't find something reasonable by tonight. if anyone has the resources to keep them temporarily until a suitable place is contacted or any other ideas, please pm me. they are scared, but even the mom isn't aggressive at all.
5/13/2008 4:23:50 PM
I thought they had to be at least 4 months to be fixed?

^awesome, that sounds like exactly what i'm looking for, at least for the mom. the mom and one kitten are at brentwood animal hospital right now. they said they can probably find homes for the kittens, but the mom will depend on how well she socializes. if she's too feral, they said they can probably spay her free of charge and return her to me to become our yard cat around the office.there's still two more kittens i'm going to try for tomorrow. both white with just a little black on their ears and tail. if anyone wants one, let me know!

So i finally got my $20 fix in the mail and the copay is $10

my buddy worked at an animal hospital one summer.. ppl would kill animals for the stupidest fucking reasonsone lady came up there and had their little 5 year old dog (can't remember breed--but it was a small and unaggressive breed) put down because she was afraid it might do something to their 4 year old grandson... she said the dog had never been aggressive to anyone but she couldn't take the riskthey usually put down dogs for free but he charged her $150 for it just because
5/19/2008 2:10:20 PM
A friend of mine is married to a vet, so I've heard all kinds of messed up stories. In one case an owner wanted to put his dog down because it was pregnant. The vet said he'd be glad to do it, at a cost of $900. He charges $150 to put down a dog and he would be killing the mother and five puppies.
5/19/2008 2:30:54 PM
How much does an average spay cost, getting a kitten from a friend. I make over 20k so wont work to use the coupon.

The POP site has prices. If you can get a voucher from the SPCA (different than the $20 fix, easier to qualify for) you can use it at the van too.
5/21/2008 3:45:52 PM
^ Are you serious?? I did not know that.
5/21/2008 5:09:27 PM
If you are being a douche, I was responding to anteck. If you were serious, info is at http://www.spcawake.org/site/PageServer?pagename=Spay_Neuter_mainpage and household income has to be under $50k.
5/21/2008 5:16:56 PM
I was being serious I just paid like $120 and am eligible for the voucher.
5/21/2008 5:28:31 PM
well, all worked out fairly well. the kitten was adopted this past saturday. they never could get the mom to socialize, and they determined she wouldn't be able to be adopted. the good news is that the vet spayed her, gave her all her shots, tested her for feline leukemia and aids. all FREE of charge! so, La Fawnduh (as the girls in the office had named her) came back to my office where she's been living and she'll just become our little mascot/guard cat
5/29/2008 12:51:26 AM
what about the other kittens?
6/1/2008 10:47:36 PM
i haven't seen them since i caught the mom and the one kitten. i guess they saw what was going on and decided to take up residence elsewhere.
