So i just bought a sports bike, nothing insane, just a 1995 600cc. what are some things as far as upkeep that i need to know for these older bikes? also the bike needs a new paint job, and the fairings are probably 7 out of 10. would it be better just to get new fairings or get it painted? and lastly what are some shops around here that can give me a decent price for a paint job. thanks tww

Same as any other bike

Check your oil, lube your chain.

Might want to run carb cleaner though it every now and then, change your brake fluid when its dirty (brown) make sure your clutch cable is in good shape. I mean it shoudnt be that much different from a rebel.

doesnt work like that. you can respect it all you want, but if you dont have the skills to ride it, then the first surprise pothole will leave you either full engine breaking, or an open throttle and going much faster than you wanted. same with panic breaking.

but you rode before, so hopefully you got all the basics down. just wear good gear. a 600cc sport is no joke, they can haul ass, even in 95.

but really, what kind of progression is that? the rebel is a very low power cruiser, up to a 70+hp sport? youd have been better off grabbing a sv650, or some other 500-600 non-sport tuned naked or standard bike, or even a ninja 500 or 650 (maybe) for progression. but at least it isnt your first bike like so many people.

I wouldn't get it painted for a while... wait until your comfort level rises a bit, then paint it or get new fairings. Don't assume that since you rode a rebel you won't be putting this one down.

I thought I wanted to upgrade to a GSXR from my Rebel, but after 2 years on the Rebel I settled on the SV650 because of $$ (and the overall feel of the bike). Although they're all motorcycles, turning on a Rebel vs. a 600 is a completely different ballgame. Like JBaz said earlier-- respect the bike and your boundaries as a rider. Planning to go to a track day to really get the curves would be a nice idea, too. I haven't gone yet, but certainly felt as if it would help before I was doctor ordered to stop riding for atleast three months, preferably a year.

Anyway-- just don't forget that Raleigh traffic is very unforgiving.

ha, an SV650 makes 70 hp or more bone stock.

a '95 600cc race-replica probably makes over 100 hp at the crank.

a new 600cc puts over 100 rwhp down.

damn, i didnt bother looking up any of my info and was hoping my ass had the right stuff. guess not

but yeah, the gz250 NEW makes 28hp abouts. so the rebel probably makes 20-30 if its still in good condition.

and crouching down on a sportbike works at 50mph. it just makes more sense when you are over 70mph since the wind starts to actually affect you (sitting standard) there.

On most bikes, once you get to the drain plug and filter, it's pretty much the same as changing the oil and filter on your car. Just use the correct type/rating of oil thats recommended in the owners manual, cause if it's got an oil bath clutch, some types can make the clutch slip.

yeah i found the filter, the bottom fairing i can take off no problem cus they are just regular screws and i have tools for them. but im not sure where the oil plug is.

The oil pan pretty much has to be on bottom... Look for a bolt with a crush washer.
