So i just bought a sports bike, nothing insane, just a 1995 600cc. what are some things as far as upkeep that i need to know for these older bikes? also the bike needs a new paint job, and the fairings are probably 7 out of 10. would it be better just to get new fairings or get it painted? and lastly what are some shops around here that can give me a decent price for a paint job. thanks tww

if this is your first bike dont bother with the paint job because you are just going to drop it

make and model? If this is your first bike with no past experience, 80-90HP to the wheel is still more than enough to hit 145+mph. Insane or not, just respect the power.

i had a honda rebel for about a year, sold it and got this one
5/10/2008 10:12:54 PM
Same as any other bikeCheck your oil, lube your chain.Might want to run carb cleaner though it every now and then, change your brake fluid when its dirty (brown) make sure your clutch cable is in good shape. I mean it shoudnt be that much different from a rebel.

Check the price on new plastics. I'm pretty sure you'll become quite happy with that "7".

make sure u have decent non-dry rotted tires on there.

when i went to register my bike and get a plate for it, the lady there told me I have 10 days to get it inspected. i dont remember having to get my honda rebel inspected last year after registering it, what is this about?
5/14/2008 6:10:54 PM
you always gotta get it inspected, but they dont really keep up with it like cars, barnetts or team powersports is pretty quick, its only $9.00, but hell, mine has been out for over ayear
5/14/2008 6:19:56 PM
mine will not pass, pretty sure of it.
5/14/2008 10:17:22 PM

dont go to the mountains and wreck your bike at walking speed
5/15/2008 9:15:58 AM
I wouldn't get it painted for a while... wait until your comfort level rises a bit, then paint it or get new fairings. Don't assume that since you rode a rebel you won't be putting this one down.I thought I wanted to upgrade to a GSXR from my Rebel, but after 2 years on the Rebel I settled on the SV650 because of $$ (and the overall feel of the bike). Although they're all motorcycles, turning on a Rebel vs. a 600 is a completely different ballgame. Like JBaz said earlier-- respect the bike and your boundaries as a rider. Planning to go to a track day to really get the curves would be a nice idea, too. I haven't gone yet, but certainly felt as if it would help before I was doctor ordered to stop riding for atleast three months, preferably a year.Anyway-- just don't forget that Raleigh traffic is very unforgiving.

^shut the fuck up asshole.and dont be one of those fags that crouches down when riding over 45mph on a sports bike. that is severely retarded
5/15/2008 11:30:57 PM
if a 12 yr old kid can make similar lap times of guys on 600 RR street bikes on the north course at VIR, it should still be fun.

5/31/2008 9:46:17 AM
http://www.repairmanualclub.com/index.phpFind your make/model. Profit. On most bikes, once you get to the drain plug and filter, it's pretty much the same as changing the oil and filter on your car. Just use the correct type/rating of oil thats recommended in the owners manual, cause if it's got an oil bath clutch, some types can make the clutch slip.[Edited on May 31, 2008 at 9:50 AM. Do you know how to take your fairings off (plastics) thats will help you access the filter, it should be pretty easy.
5/31/2008 5:26:13 PM
yeah i found the filter, the bottom fairing i can take off no problem cus they are just regular screws and i have tools for them. but im not sure where the oil plug is.
5/31/2008 6:28:43 PM
Somewhere on the oil pan... The oil pan pretty much has to be on bottom... Look for a bolt with a crush washer.
5/31/2008 6:46:26 PM
whats the word for when the head of a screw is messed up pass the point where a screw driver cant do anything to it....
6/1/2008 5:03:21 PM
stripped?
6/1/2008 5:08:09 PM
yep thats it, the screw that goes through my oil plug is "stripped". does anyone in here have a tool to re-strip the screw? i'll gladly pay you a few bux if you can help
6/1/2008 7:19:50 PM
^considering your confusion with basic terminology, you should probably take it to a pro or at least to s neighbouring rednech that has held a wrench in his hand (and beer in the other) since he's been 13 y. o.
6/1/2008 7:23:32 PM
get a Dremel tool and cut a flathead slot in it and take it out.
