My dad was telling me he read in the paper about a month ago that NC State was considered the safest campus in North Carolina.

Expires: 6/3/08

Early Saturday morning, May 3rd, at approximately 5:00 am, two students
reported being robbed while sitting in their car in front of Bragaw
Residence Hall. The two suspects came up to the car and demanded money;
one had a small silver handgun. The two suspects were last seen running
towards Student Health Services and possibly were driving a small-sized
pick-up truck. There were no injuries.

Suspect 1: male, dark complexion, black hoodie and long dark shorts,
5'10" to 6 feet tall, skinny, approx. 16-17 years old

Suspect 2: male, dark complexion, grey hoodie and long shorts, 5'6' to
5'8" tall, skinny, approx. 16-17 years old(held handgun)

Contact the NCSU Police if you have any informtion; 515-3000.

Rememeber: Report suspicious activity to the police (911 or 515-3000)
Call 515-3000 for Safety Escorts.

For our size Raleigh is a safe city...and NCSU is a safe campus. You can't expect a large city and campus like this never to have a robbery.

About a month ago 4 guys on bikes jumped someone and stole his wallet near Doak Field at 2:00am. I saw 4 guys sitting on bikes in the west lot when I went to my car at about 10:00pm just 4 hours earlier.

For an open urban campus NCSU is pretty safe. I've stopped parking in the Dan Allen Deck when I'm here late night.

Out of pure curiosity (I'm not saying you're wrong), how are you coming to this conclusion? Have you seen the crime rates of similar sized campuses in similar sized cities (both population and area or population density)?

If students would learn some situational awareness some of these things could be prevented. pay attention when you walk at night, stay in lit areas away from bushes, walk in the middle of a street (like a non busy street on campus) so you can see someone approach you ahead of time, dont talk on a phone and walk, travel in a group when possible, report suspicious people, be pro active.

these are people with dark complexion

they're gonna be a little bit harder for your average fatass to outrun

i'm honestly tired of seeing this thug shit pop up in my email, you shouldn't have to be worried when walking from the library at night (like 9-11pm) to your car in reynold's collesium deck (or however that's spelled)

It doesn't matter where you are, who you are, or what you are. It's stupid to walk alone after dark. Walking alone after dark is asking to get jumped. Even if you think you're in the most rural area, you will get jumped. Don't think you're too good to call campus security when you're leaving DH Hill at 2.

how much? firefox failed me on that one.

I agree its retarded to go alone after dark, I always walk people to their cars when its late. Its just irritating that we have to do that on a campus that's supposedly safe. What is the student escort on campus, what do they do if you call for a person?

Honestly I think NCSU is pretty safe. Like any city area there's the risk of somebody breaking into your car to steal shit, but mine has not been touched in the 3 years I've had it with me near campus and a lot of that has to do with how much of a victim you let yourself be. If you do practice the situational awareness bit (don't be afraid to walk the other way when there's a sketchy group of people somewhere on campus), you make sure to lock your car and either put shit out of sight or remove it from the car entirely, and you don't go prancing around campus in your nicest set of clothes (walking by yourself on campus at night while looking well-dressed is a sure way to label yourself as an unsuspecting ATM) you're probably not going to have a problem here on campus. Of course, use reason when you're on campus and doing stuff late as well.

Don't just wait to the last minute to work on something like every other idiot out there, and try to plan it so you don't have to be out late at night to go to computer labs or the library to get work done. Work from your dorm or apartment and use your personal computer, and whatever software you need you can use on campus (or uh, just ask around and see who can help you work off-campus <_<. While it is super convenient to be able to go and find a computer lab somewhere in the late hours of the night to work on your stuff, it's retarded to do it because you're putting yourself in an avoidable situation and increasing your risk of getting robbed.

With that said, it looks like there have been a lot more robberies this semester than past semesters. There was an article in the news about how, compared to the first few months of last year, this year has had 51% more robberies on average than the year before. Crime's going up a little bit right now (as it does when times start turning a little rough for people who don't make much money to begin with), and you need to be aware of that when deciding whether or not you want to go walking around alone at 11pm in abandoned areas of campus. IMO it doesn't seem like anybody can do anything about the crime as it's increasing due to multiple factors, I think (inflation of "necessity" type goods, people getting out of prison for crimes they committed in the early 90's, greater income disparity in the area due in part to gentrification and a lack of community outreach/service work).

I'm assuming it's just a fluke occurrence due to national and international events and the condition of things for the urban poor in Raleigh right now. Crime's up cause things are down a bit and it'll improve once this cycle passes (or once they put all the criminals that just got out back in jail :/ ).

I'm sure a cop would know a little more about why this is happening. If Republican18 wants to expand on the topic a bit.

gangs. without being overly simplistic, the rise of crime and the rise of gangs in an area are totally correlated. robbery is a status crime for a gang member. punk thugs who want to gain respect in the gang, go out and jack somebody to gain standing. that is a fact.

It could be a good idea to purchase an illumination device to see into those dark crevices of the campus.

It just seems to me that the campus police are understaffed at night, most of the times the police are deployed to dorms for reasons beyond their control, and there's not many officers left around to patrol. It would be nice to have student squad (2 student, flashlight, mace) foot patrols if for nothing else than presence, although that would probably be too much of a liability for the university to sanction.

I, for one, think they should bring back student patrol the way it used to be. I used to feel very safe walking around at night knowing that their were 30+ ROTC guys with nightsticks patrolling the campus in pairs in addition to the standard patrols by campus police.

How small is campus police? The parking lots empty out after about 5:00pm. Couldn't they park one cop at the West lot, Dan Allen Deck, Reynolds Deck, etc?

^ No offense, but when Hopkins is listed as the safest campus in the country, I lose all confidence in their methodology.

I think NC State is relatively safe given that it's an urban campus. You have to be a little bit careful since we are in the middle of the city, but Raleigh is no Baltimore, Durham, or Chicago.

Sorry didn't reread the whole thread, My earlier statement has been supported by the NCSU chief of police (yes I know, the source is not the most impartial)

I've also been to a few urban campuses in Chicago and St Louis. The campus in Chicago was a closed campus, I still didn't feel safe and the campus in St Louis was similar to NCSU, also did not feel safe.

It is far to late to maintain a coherent argument.

I think were actually pretty lucky there are not more robberies.

Big city
Tons of spots on campus are dark as hell
Easy targets (walking alone late at night in unlit areas)
Robbers know you are unarmed
Not much police presence at night (based on my observations)

^^Oh I am armed! I'm a history major and I often had a full back sack of note books this semester, so I would use a tote bag that I got at orientation to carry all of my books which weighed a lot. One hit over the head with that and they would learn to behave themselves.

The world is not a safe place--NC State is an open campus that is part of the world. For that matter, life itself is not a safe place.

idk i guess i just feel safe cause i've never had a problem except the occasional bum wanting a dollar, which is more of a nuisance than a campus safety issue...i never really hear about problems at other colleges either, so maybe other places are safer, all i know is i feel we provide adequate safety and information

i hope you people get robbed

^ Hey relax guy, it's more blaming the victims for deciding to go out and about at that time of the night. If you don't have to do it you shouldn't do it around here unless you're going to be in a group the whole night.

Not sure if the NCSU area has seen a proportionate increase, but the number of robberies in Raleigh YTD is up 50% from last year. No, that's not a typo. 50%.

That's far from a "normal fluctuation".
