Food Bank. that sounds cool. never heard of them. i'd like to volunteer for something young and progressive. i think that'll get me involved. the poverty issue is really becoming a problem. especially with the rise of food cost.

Well, then a word of caution about the Food Bank in Raleigh.

All the guys at the warehouse, the ones that tell volunteers what to do, are old and conservative. And every time I've been they're all wearing the getup of retired military, with the goofy hats worn on the very top of the head, tucked in shirts (regardless of whether the shirt is meant to be), and are not that hip nor cool.

Helping the poor shouldn't come at the cost of associating with such people. To quote another thread, enjoy your **** liberalism somewhere else.

I like to adopt bums. There are two bums downtown that I take care of (give money too, buy a sandwhich, etc).

I highly recommend this method.

i hate when people try to assume one's a liberal. being cool can be conservative. i was basically born into conservatism, especially coming up in a religious household. also, i'm a veteran. i could potentially fit in.

i'm conservative on some issues and liberal on others. there's a balance.

I was just poking fun at the idea that you were looking specifically for something 'young and progressive,' as if you'd rule anything out that wasn't. Most of it was sarcasm.

You should go by and at least do it for a half-day. Monday-Saturday has two shifts: 9-12 and 1-4. Most of it is just random warehouse work, some of which gets very dirty. And you won't work directly with any of the hungry people, if that wasn't clear. You'll have to go to a soup kitchen or some equivalent ministry at a church for that type of thing.

no worries. i think i'll figure something out. it's just lately i've felt the urge to really contribute. i've been watching CurrentTV and they talk about Haiti. i live so close and i see haitian people here often, but i had no idea it was the poorest country in the world.

its hard to phantom.
