why do people do this? mix dry rice in granulated sugar

so it doesn't clump as much. works for salt too.

how do you separate them back out?

my grandma always put sugar and salt in shakers, she had a big shaker (like the tall parmesan shakers at pizza places) for sugar. it had holes big enough for sugar to come out, but the rice wouldn't. one of grandma's many odd kitchen items.[Edited on April 29, 2008 at 9:02 AM. Reason : asoi8vt ba]

thanks punky
4/29/2008 9:34:33 AM
it absorbs moisture and keeps the sugar or salt from clumping
4/29/2008 9:35:42 AM
no problem.

Rice doesn't absorb water that easily, it just provides agitation to break up salt/sugar clumps

I've never had my salt or sugar clumpI think the rice thing is for more humid climates
4/29/2008 11:16:51 AM
I've had it happen with salt, but never sugar.
4/29/2008 11:19:12 AM
they say this area is a fairly humid climate

Brown sugar is the ultimate clumper!
4/29/2008 11:27:03 AM
yeah but you don't want to dry out brown sugar or you'll end up with a rock...
4/29/2008 11:31:47 AM
terpinado or whatever that shit is called is key.
4/29/2008 11:32:09 AM
Turbinado

In Georgia my brown sugar clumped like a mofo, but here I haven't had it clump up much at all. Weird.
4/29/2008 11:35:34 AM
if you put a piece of bread, or a slice of apple in your brown sugar bag and let it sit for a while it'll help it to unclump

i've seen a few kernals of white rice put into a salt shaker to keep moisture out of the salt, but i've never seen anyone store rice in a bunch of salt or sugar. that just doesn't make sense to me.[Edited on April 29, 2008 at 12:20 PM. Reason : xxx]
