gonna be there for 4 days this coming week, on business, but my early afternoons and evenings are all free...suggestions of things to do or places to go? i understand that they have a pretty good live music scene...anyone know of any good venues, or dinner places with good live bands?

austin has a great live music scene. You should check around to see if there are any shows you might be interested in.

6th street is awesomethey have a coyote ugly. lots of places where bands go. army boys go up there for the weekend though so watch out

I go to Austin for work on a pretty regular basis. 6th street.. definitely. There's usually a lot going on pretty much any night of the week. There will be bands playing every night as well, but the better bands are more common on the weekends. Mostly, just avoid anything you've heard of before, and stick to the local spots (which is most of them.) They're proud of the "keep Austin weird" camapigns.. and the local places all do their part to make downtown a fun place to hang out.

chicken shit bingo is a sunday only thing but very hilarious. my friends won $312 one time.like everyone said, 6 street is amazing. the ridiculous amount of bars there make it cheap as hell to drink there. also catch a sunset on the hills overlooking lake austin. I forgot the name of the park.

I was there for my cousin's wedding last year...other than the rehearsal dinner at this fairly well known bbq/cookout place a short drive from Austin....all I saw was the Four Seasons hotel. My aunt and uncle live there though on the lake so if you'd like, I'll let them know they should prepare for a guest.

all things considered, i really liked austin...the weather was perfect (though, apparently, it's not usually as nice as it was those 4 days) and free buses at least make it easier to go across the city if you need to (though we stuck pretty close to the same area, and walking was nice)we did county line one night...i'm not a fan of nc bbq (the vinegar-based stuff)...but texas bbq (sweet, tangy, and smoky) is amazing...county line rocked (though we didn't do the all-you-can eat)...the marbled brisket was better than the lean IMOwe did 6th street two nights - went to the iron cactus for dinner once, and then did some bar hopping the second night...the irish pub (b.d. riley's?) had a really great live band one night (it was a tuesday, so pickings were kind of slim anyway)...i would have liked to checked out esther's follies one night, but apparently it's only thursday, friday, and saturday nights that they're open...and, just because i'd never been in one, we stopped in at coyote ugly oh, and embassy suites' complimentary happy hour helps keep the bar tabs down if you partake before walking to 6th street the bats were actually very cool, though taking pictures was almost out of the question since it was dusk...i got some good video of it insteadoverall, despite the fact that austin's a college town (capital, too, but still), there's a huge age range that goes out looking for a good time (at least, more of a range than i've seen around here)...it also seemed like people were a bit more mature (then again, they were weeknights) and so instead of meeting a bunch of drunk college kids, i met a bunch of only mildly inebriated late-20/early-30-somethings that were just downright fun to talk tooh, and torchy's tacos was awesome...i recommend "the republican" and the "green chili" tacosthanks for all the suggestions, y'all
