i've had issues with my 95 grand Cherokee b4 but i can't figure this 1 out. i start the car, the temp works it's way up to around 240 . after a little driving it shoots back to normal temps, at idle it creeps up to 210-220, at highway speeds the temp drops to around 160 which is lower than operating temps. my first thought was thermostat so i replaced that . then maybe a dying water pump ... but that's good too. the only thing i think is maybe my coolant to water mixture is off.

What makes you think that your water pump is ok? It's possible for its pumping capacity to be diminished (impeller worn, impeller detached) and still have no leakage from the weep hole. From what you are describing this may be the problem. You may also have a clogged radiator or a bad fan clutch.[Edited on April 25, 2008 at 1:54 AM. Reason : 765]

hmmm yea the water pump is a little over a year old and nothings coming out of the weeping hole so i guessed it was ok, didn't think ab the impeller being detached. after taking it back out for a quick drive the water pump itself is steaming hot so i guess i should replace it and do a flush. this will be water pump 3 in 3 years thanks for the help though

Yeah, I haven't had any problems with parts store water pumps. They usually have a warranty too.

why the fuck do people keep saying water pump? lets look at this again:temp rises at idletemp decreases in city driving with ~40mph airflow.at stoplight with no airflow temp. increases.get on highway with ~70mph airflow temp. decreases alot.i'm going to go out on a limb here with a swag and say it's a faulty fan clutch.

When my car had air in the system this is exactly what it did. Still, it could be a few things such as the fan clutch.

it's a 5.2 i haven't changed out the water pump and the problem is still there. i did notice i have whining when i turn now so i checked my belts and ps fluid all good. i came to the fan conclusion too since it'd put extra stress on everything running on the serpentine belt. for the las t couple days i've been researching doing the electric fan conversion. anybody who's done it notice a difference in power?

^^you might not notice it but there will be a slight improvement in power. how much is questionable. if you do decide to convert to electric fans be sure to get a kit that includes a shroud. just bolting on some electric fans will get you by and keep it cool at idle but your a/c will suffer tremendously. running the a/c at idle will most likely cause the temps to rise if you don't get a shroud due to the condenser heat soaking the radiator.

weird cooling problem turned out to not be so weird. my radiator is spewing stream along the right side along the side tanks. guess i'l be callin 1800 radiator. think i'm still going to move forward witht he electric fan conversion drove it around today w.o. the fan for a bit and it feels like it's got a lil more power in the higher rpms
