"Rap Snacks Hip-Hop to Success
November 11, 2002

PHILADELPHIA — When Rap Snacks debuted in 1995, M.C. Potato—a cartoon potato sporting a backward-facing baseball cap—used to grace the front of the potato-chip bag. Now, hip-hop music stars are featured on the 2 million bags sold each week at mom-and-pop corner stores.

A bag of "Cheezie Nacho" chips has a picture of rapper Warren G, while the "Bar-B-quing with my Honey" chips features the image of Lil' Romeo. The chips sell for 25 cents each.

James Lindsay, president of Rap Snacks, designs the bags and adds positive messages
like "Stay in School" and "Respect Your Elders." He created Rap Snacks with the goal of promoting positive messages to urban youth to help them "deal with the social aspects of the inner city."

The company was bought by Lil Romeo last year. Maybe the bags are bigger now-hence the price increase.
