You are losing some room by it being the base model. Go get yourself a new 2008 with options and negotiate it down below the base of a 09. With the way the economy is at the moment you should be able to walk out for 19k easily.

^^ sure it did

here's all you could possibly want to know, and probably somewhat more:

http://www.fool.com/Car/Car.htm

all of that said, my advice is to not buy a brand new car...especially a Camry (it's pointless--it's not like it's a next generation 'Vette or BMW or Lotus or Porsche...the latest, greatest Camry is still, well, nothing to get worked up about and piss away tons of money on). Buy one a year or two old and let someone else get crushed on the initial depreciation hit.

I started looking at local (within 150 miles) Toyota dealer's inventories through their individual websites and contacted 3- one local and two about an hour away (each with at least one X-Runner on the lot). In my initial email question sent to the dealerships I basically asked for "the out-the-door cash price without any extras or extended warranties". To the two smaller, out of town dealerships I also mentioned how I wasnt happy with the pricing my local dealer was giving me. One of those two is affialiated with a dealer that a family member recently purchased a new vehicle from, this also helps. All of the dealers responded very quickly, although I believe the larger the dealership the bigger their internet sales team is. On a similar note the prices I was negotiating from the smaller dealers seemed toget lower more quickly.

NOTE: the fees at other dealers across the country will surely vary. In this situation, tax is 3%, tags are $134, and inspection is $9.10. The truck I was asking about was the basic X-Runner (MSRP $24,045) plus Manufacturing/Delivery/Processing/Handling fees ($735) with carpet mats (MSRP $199) plus $20 fuel surcharge for a sticker price of $24,999.

ROUND ONE
Dealer #1 (local, large dealer, with 1 XR on the lot, $499 documents fee)
$23,853.80 out the door

Dealer #2 (hour away, smallest, also with only one XR on the lot, $399 doc fee)
$23616.46 out the door

Dealer #3 (1.5 hours away, middle of the three in size, 3 XR on the lot, $348 doc fee)
$23,500 out the door

Now I used the lowest number, along with the TMV price report you can get off edmunds.com to go to the two higher dealers and see what they could come up with. On a whim, I got back to the lowest quoting dealer and told them I wanted to pay $21k before any fees.

ROUND TWO
Dealer #1
$23,338.80 OTD

Dealer #2
$23,089 OTD

Dealer #3
no response

Then I decided to head by the local dealer and just test drive their RR unit to kill some time. Mentioned that dealer #2 beat his price, and he agreed to match it.

I hate doing this...why can't they just offer it at a reasonable fixed price.....

Rule 1: Don't buy from dealers. No matter how good of a deal you think you're getting, the dealership will still pocket $1000. Of course, if you simply have to have a new model...

^Because haggling is how the entire world works. The wal-mart world in which you grew up might lead you to believe everything has a fixed price, but it doesn't. Every item is worth exactly what you're willing to pay for it, and some people are more willing than others.

[Edited on April 13, 2008 at 8:07 AM. Reason : Interestingly, wal-mart's inventory people are some of the most hard-core negotiators on the planet.]

haha

the same type of thing is on the front page of Yahoo now. But yea, don't buy a new car. The only exception I would think is for something like a sports car, so you know no one has ragged the hell out of it.

another good reason to buy new is if the vehicle you are looking at only depreciates a little bit each year. look at camrys that are about 3 years old, that are coming out of warranty, and how they have depreciated. if it isnt a lot then i would consider new.

Buy the oldest used car you can still get a new car interest rate on.

It's pretty much the best way to buy a "newish" car.

well, if you hate doing it enough, and don't mind paying extra to not have to haggle, just go to Carmax or somewhere similar.

Personally, I really like the system working like that...you can take advantage of someone who really needs to sell and get a better deal. Furthermore, dealers can afford to offer me a really good deal because some other poor schmoe is willing to pay a fat price to offset it. It's a net gain for me.

ok i know this totally throws the discussion off the rails but

what about leasing a new car, with absolutely no intention of paying off the full amount after 36 months, why should i negotiate anything except the monthly price (something ALL the sites ive read said not to do)

right now they have a special for $199, $1999 down (my trade in should be around 3000, ill go no lower than 2250) so thats about 8k out of my pocket for a brand new 20ishk car that hasnt been touched for 3 years

i can afford to make double payments for 1.5 years and get it over with and save up for a down payment on my next car and repeat if possible till i get out of law school which is when id actually purchase a new car

im just thinking at the moment, what is best for my current situation

Do everything by email and phone. In this day an age, there is absolutely no reason to go in other than to test drive and sign papers.

Internet sales managers will deal because they like a quick sale, and you can still play dealers off of each other. Just go to edmunds.com forums and see what other people have gotten so your expectations are calibrated correctly.

Submitting yourself to the pressure cooker is stupid. Use the modern tools available to you. Along those lines, there are several good sites with good advice.

I'm just going to quote everything theduke posts in this thread from here on out.

If you're going to lease a car make it a brand/model thats going to take a large depreciation hit. A camry or accord isn't going to depreciate enough in your lease period. I'm glad there are people, like you, out there that cant stand to buy 3 year old cars. Instead they pursue a lease which will bind them into taking care of the car and keeping it low mileage. Perfect for people like me .

plz explain. when i go to SECU's website I only see new car and used car rates... how do you buy used and get new car % rates?

Quote :

If you can get 0-2% financing on a new car, vs 6% on a used car, isn't that a decent reason to at least think about buying new....if you can find that good interest rate on the car you're interested in?

^^^^SECU finances used and new cars at the same rates unless they're 'green' cars. Many other places do not do that.

I mean from when I looked the difference between used and new was ~1%. The difference on 20 grand is going to be under 20$ (a month) over 3 years.

Granted the dealer incentives on new cars of 0.9% for X months was better than both of the above.

It's a simple calculation to find whats the best for you.

No shit indeed, but I hear people bragging about the "deals" they get all the time. If they only knew how little that shit brings at auctions.
