This doesn't help you.But I almost had a job in Savannah.I love my current gig.But living in Savannah for a hot minute would have been killer.Oh well.

Despite what you have heard or seen in the movies, Savannah is actually pretty fucking ghetto and boring. Its not on or really "near the beach" The closest beach is Tybee Island which is really really really local and might not be your idea of a tourist beach. There are some good bars on River St. Lady & Sons(Paula Deans restaurant) is fucking awesome. There are a few sights from Forrest Gump, but thats really about it. Its not this super amazing awesome tons of shit to see and do city that most people make it out to be really. It is beautiful and there are tons of cool houses though.Oh, and not that this is in your time frame of your trip, but in the summer it is hotter than hell, and when I say that, its not just hot, it really is HOTTER THAN HELL. And on top of that its humid as fuck and there are a shit ton of gnats. And when I say a "shit ton" I mean you can't stand still for more than 5 seconds without blowing gnats out of your mouth, puffing air out of your nose our mouth, or wiggling your ears. Can't wiggle your ears you say, well just go to Savannah in the summer and have the gnats attack you, and you will be amazed at what your body will do in defense.[Edited on April 12, 2008 at 12:18 AM. 4/12/2008 12:15:19 AM
Like I said, River St is awesome, but other than that, for someone in college or near it, the city is pretty fucking ghetto/boring. Venture off of the tourisrty sites a few blocks and get back to me.

Its kinda sad when the one thing most people seem to mention about a great historical city like Savannah is some fat chain smoking bitch who has only been around for about 60yrs and only been famous for about 10.
4/12/2008 1:24:43 AM
of all the things that make me upset, i think that is number 1.
4/12/2008 1:29:23 AM
chain smoking ??
4/12/2008 1:31:02 AM
My uncle went to HS with her and runs into her every now and then when she is in Albany. He says she smokes like there is no tomorrow and did back in high school as well.

I believe Savannah has the largest historic district in the country. They are lots of good places to eat, Tybee Island is a nice day trip, the SCAD(Savannah College of Art and Design) is in town plus there are a good amount of art galleries. There are Carriage rides as well as ghost tours at night. It's also pretty close to Columbia.I could definitely fill a week there. Two weeks, I don't know.Btw, if you do plan on going to Paula Dean's restaurant you had better get there early in the day to make reservations for later. It is asses and elbows with people stretching down the block.Surprisingly, my favorite place to eat there was at the Pirate House because they had these baller spring rolls stuffed with pulled pork and collards. There was even a Jack Sparrow impersonator that was spot on.If you do decide to go I would drop by Mrs. Wilke's Boarding house. It opens only for lunch where you get seated at a large table and Southern food is passed around family style.I want to say that it's $15 a head but it was still a great experience. As it turns out the restaurant is supposedly listed in that 1,000 places to visit before you die book. As I exited the restaurant, limping from all the ingested food, there were some Japanese tourists with cameras and book in question in hand.....so yeah.

i went to savannah with my honey last year and it was kind of boring. you can take a boat across the river, its free and you can walk around. there is a cool maritime museum there. Vic's is a nice restaurant if you're ballin. the pink house is supposed to be good but the service was so shitty we left.
4/12/2008 5:20:14 AM
stuck flex is there every other weekend
4/12/2008 10:54:44 AM

4/12/2008 11:15:01 AM
I don't know if I'd say whipped. It's just a different vibe dating someone thats your own age than someone 8 years younger.
4/12/2008 11:15:59 AM

4/12/2008 11:55:15 AM
If all Savannah had to offer was escape from Raleigh and restaurants, I'd be more than content.
4/12/2008 5:16:35 PM

savannah tour of homes is kinda neat... http://www.savannahtourofhomes.orghttp://www.savannahvisit.com/tour.asp kinda neat slideshowalso, there's a really, really big garden, absolutely gorgeous right now, but i can't remember where it is. it's probably in a tourist guide thing.this is really disturbing... how can people eat this shit?http://www.savannahvisit.com/images/downloads/ecards/20060717_163132.jpg

The town is set up in a traditional, as opposed to surburban, style. People go there to walk the streets to go to the bars and shops and whatnot. Spend some time walking around.
4/23/2008 8:18:04 AM
I'm not much of a planner, so we're basically just going to play it by ear. Im hoping the weather clears up though. was counting on at least one day at the beach.

I took a trip to Savannah with the girlfriend in March and had a great time. First of all--while some parts of the city are a little ghetto, how is that different than anywhere else? Just avoid the ghetto parts and you'll be fine. The historic district is awesome and completely walkable, I only had to drive once the entire time I was there. (It helps if you're staying in the historic district...)What to do...hmm.-If you want to go to the beach, Tybee Island is ~15 minutes away. I did not go there, so I don't have any comments.-Bonaventure Cemetery is actually worth visiting. Huge old cemetery with lots of gravesites from the 1800's--very scenic. Johnny Mercer and Conrad Aiken are buried there, among others. Be sure to get good directions as it's not that easy to find (it's hidden away off a main road).-For bars and restaurants, River Street is awesome (many bars, many good seafood places, we had a good Cajun-style meal at Huey's), but it's not the only place. We went to a great Tapas bar one night with live music called Jazz'd. Great food, fun drinks, and live music. Highly recommended. There's a great gelato place in City Market...Crystal Beer Parlor has good burgers and drafts (just don't go at an off time on a weekday, we went there at like 3 PM and it took for-freakin-ever to get served)...Firefly cafe is a nice lunch spot on one of the scenic squares... We actually didn't even make it to Paula Deen's. (We did look in the gift shop, most overpriced place ever...)-If you've read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil you'll see lots of places that were mentioned in what the locals simply call "The Book".-The day we arrived we did one of the "trolley tours" just to get a sense of where everything is; not bad, especially if your driver is good (ours was hilarious). If you're really into architecture, I highly recommend an Architectural tour from http://www.architecturalsavannah.com/index.html. Web site is a little weird but the tour is good, the guide (Jonathan) really knows his stuff and makes it pretty approachable.-Be sure to just spend some time walking around. Forsyth park is beautiful, especially the main fountain, and lies on the edge of the Victorian district (which is separate from the Historic District). The famous squares are all nice places to sit on a bench and watch the world go by. Historic homes everywhere you look, moss-draped live oaks, the works. That's all I got for now...
4/23/2008 11:25:17 AM
visit Shannon, doesn't he live down there somewhere?
4/23/2008 11:27:07 AM
He lives in Atlanta...not too close.

Avoid tourist traps, aka Paula Deen's place, pirate house, carriage rides, blah blah... Just bar hop and walk around. The info center down on River Street should have enough info for you to navigate the area. Do any walking around in early morning to avoid the heat, take a nap in the afternoon, and head back out at night. Bars that most people I know frequent: The Rail, The Jinx, and Hang Fire. There are lots of other places around Congress St. Just walk around and I'm sure you'll find something. The beach and Fort Pulaski are okay places for day trips. If you are looking for good food Zunzi's is good for lunch on a nice day, B & D or Loco's if you want to do local burger joints and Carlitos is a killer Mexican restaurant. For veg options you don't have much, Brighter Day and The Sentient Bean are on the south side of Forsyth Park and usually will have something quick for you. If you want something unique try the Griffin Tea Room. Jazz'd is a good tapas bar. Sakura has great cheap Japaneses/sushi.The scenery is the best thing about Savannah, so walking around will get you far if in doubt.
