yeah, that's a good area. out around falls lake used to be good also, like raven ridge, six forks after it splits from possum track, etc. it's really grown up out there in the past couple of years though, so it might not be worth it any more.

i always liked exploring that whole area along a path roughly from durham to wake forest north and south of the highway 98 corridor. there's nothing incredibly challenging, but it's the most enjoyable scenery you'll find anywhere around the raleigh area with some curves mixed in.

check the local forums, i know there are a lot of people that have posted up nice routes with google maps. everything from a couple of hours to stuff that'll take you all day.

Here's a nice loop out by Falls Lake:

Go northbound on Six Forks. It turns into New Light Road out past highway 98. A bit after you cross the lake, make a left on Old Weaver Trail. You'll cross over 50, then cross over the lake again, at which point the road turns into Cheek Road. Left on Fletcher's Chapel Road, and that turns into Stallings Road. Stallings will bring you back to 98, at which point you can go eastbound and get back to Six Forks.

from tryon, head south on lake wheeler rd, hang a right on ten ten, cruise through holly springs and back up north towards cary is my favorite route. lots of great scenery, some nice twisties, and not a lot of traffic

^ I agree. Just got off a nice ride on Lake Wheeler. I road down towards Crooked Creek and back.


And apparently motorcyclists have an unwritten code to always wave at fellow bikers. Had like 3 different bikes wave to me.

This was my first time out on the new bike and I'm quite pleased. Too bad the weather is shit for the next few days....

go down lake wheeler
turn right at penny road
turn left on blaney franks(sp) (2nd turn after you go over the bridge by the lake)
turn right at the end of it on to ten-ten.
ride that to holly springs.


I dont have a bike but thats what I drive the convertible around when bored.

There is a bunch of wild back roads out in Pittsboro also.But watch out alot of them turn into dirt

Ryan... try going to googlemaps and looking for roads... You went with us that one time through Harnett County... We actually went through there this morning and it was beautiful and there were no cars around. I think Kyle is trying to kill you telling you to get on 440... Fuck tryin to compete with cars!

MotoGP racing really makes me want to start racing and going to the track and such I need a job!

Im not retarded thinking im going to ride 440, ive mainly been riding around lake wheeler and such. Mainly looking for a place to run with the harley guys at work (there are 5 of them) so looking for some senic stuff, i dont think these guys are going to speed much. I really need to get a gps unit.

This summer I'm hoping on getting either a concourse14 or a fjr, that way I can take some real trips (I;m sorry but im not riding 10 hours on a RR doubled up)

I really feel bad blowing though good tires commuting as well, i figure ill have one buy for fun, and one for travel, im only getting ~5k miles on my current ones and i would say only about 50 of them have been anything where i was turning. Ive almost considered putting some road tires on it esp with the price of gas.

well, depending on what tires you have, expect taking any turns to eat up your tires even faster. The original Diablo's and M1's are gone after 1500 miles or even less. Pilot powers gone in 2500 miles, and almost every other performance tires are around that, but depends on your skill level. The more force, more wear on the tires. Race tires don't last at all.

You can get economy tires, but most are pretty shitty and most are made for touring or cruiser's. You can put them on sports bikes, but be warned, it's like driving on a glass surface. Don't expect to take turns or have any sort of wet/dry performance. Even then, you may only get 10k miles or less. Battleax's had a good reputation for decent performance and mileage.

The cheapest thing is to buy some track tires of where the sidewalls are gone, but good down the middle for commuting. You can probably get a set for like less than 100 for your RR. If you have your own way to mount and balance tires, you'd be set.

Also, one more thing, some of the later performance tires have good wear and performance. The M3's, 2ct's, Diablo Strata's. Good wear even when taking some twisties.

im rolling on 2cts and since i mainly ride too and from work i wear the middle out way before the edges. im thinking of putting some Z6's on it, because i had them on my katana and they are dual compound hard center medium sides, i know ill loose some proformance but frankly I'm not using the bike as its intended 95% of the time. Ill just have to take it into account if i do.

You have to take into account about the heat cycles tires go through. Most performance tires can warm up in as little as a few minutes of normal riding to get their temps up to the optimal settings for max grip. Economy tires tend to lack that and can take a long time to heat up properly to get the best grip, sometimes, that could be 15-30mins max. And even then, it may not give good grip.

The continuous heat cycles that tires goes through will also kill tires. I'm not sure of the science behind the tire wear of it, but I do know that repetitive heat cycles can deform the tire a bit of where you have bumps on it. My 208's had these problems. Haven't experienced it on newer tires though.

Hey Squirt-- you should look out for this awesome Moto GP documentary... I don't remember the specifics, but moparnum5 & I watched it a couple of weeks ago, and it was really nicely done. It cronicles essentially the entire season of the [then] defending world champ (I think it was the 06 champion?).

As far as riding-- I'll second what BBR said about heading out north to the Six Forks/Raven Ridge/Possum Track area-- however, definitely don't go during prime times (i.e. 5-6PM). They've added a few stoplights that really screw up the flow of traffic on Falls that time of day & everyone is scattering through the backroads now to try to get past the ridiculous backups. You can really open up on hwy 98 heading toward Durham occasionally, too-- it's about a 50/50 shot of whether you'll be flying solo or stuck in traffic, but it's wonderfully amazing if you catch it on a good day.

i've ridden on everything from dunslops to 2ct's and as long as u warm them up properly and know how to ride ull be fine.

ppl running super sticky tires on the street are wasting their money

^ There are some touring tires that handle like you're riding on ice, i'm stuck with only metzler or michelin on mine, good grip, high mileage, and high load rating. Last trip to the mountains I mounted a new set of dunlops before I left, and was on belts front and rear after 1200 miles, had to limp it back home easy.
