Okay I'm doing a project for one of my classes, and I'm trying to find rock songs that can be compared to music from different periods of time, such as the renaissance/reformation period, the baroque period, classical period, and so on.

Specifically I'm looking for modern (meaning 1950-now) examples of fugues, arias, concerto, oratorio, movements, etc.

Also, I'm wanting to get some songs that the covers of them are really popular but many people don't know it's a cover.

This are some things I have so far...
Fugue: Guelah Papyrus (the instrumental part) by Phish
Movements: Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (this one might be a bit of a stretch)
Covers: Most songs by Bob Dylan

that should answer most any questions you have...

always go with Lover's Concerto by The Toys and Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum

[Edited on March 31, 2008 at 7:20 PM. Reason : those were the first 2 i thought of and they are on the list]

Oh also, the covers shouldn't be too hard, cause the main audience for this are high school students who think the only form of music is rap, these kids have never even heard of ben folds

Also, an example of recitive and aria is Brick by Ben Folds

Proud Mary is also a good one. Too many people think that Ike and Tina are the originals

^ Yeah, it changes the whole meaning...in a totally great way.

Fogerty fights against THE man.

Tina fights against HER man.

Also, the Tim McGraw version of "When the Stars Go Blue" sucks. The original pwns.

the struggle of blue-collar workers against the man is infinitely more noble and admirable than Tina Turner's stupid sexism-fueled struggles against her hard-ass, unappreciative boss

I guess if she worked for a hard-ass, unappreciative female boss, that would be a-ok with her

I do agree that Tim McGraws is worse. I didn't realize it was a cover and I thought it was a good song, and then I heard the original and I was like damn, Tim sucks at this song.

Back to the songs that are inspired by music from earlier periods...

That wiki list is okay, but those are songs based on the earlier songs.

Like I'm looking for original works that are modern day versions of fugue, or cantata, or concerto

renaissance: TONS by Blind Guardian. Im not even sure which to pick first. Their actual metal songs are VERY rooted in using musical modes commonly associated with the renaissance period. They also do songs that arent metal that are very renaissance. One of my favorites of their's is "The Bard's Song"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2ErYEwYq34

seeing that song live is sweeeet too.

The only bad thing about the covers is the fact that I don't really know much of what is played on the radio anymore so I don't know if there are any new covers out that are popular. There are also a lot of covers out there that I'm sure high school kids wouldn't even know the cover, much less the original artist.
