White Stripes & Arcade Fire are the two best options

Are we talking which band had the best debut album in the past 10 years?

Or which band has become the best since their debut 10 years ago or sooner?

Changes the answer greatly.

Yeah, the title and the first post don't match up very well.

Either way, the first Shins album totally changed my life.

He wasn't comparing Arcade Fire to an emo band, it's obvious he's never listened to them.

Jesus man, learn to read.

yea i think there was some terrible band with the words arcade and/or fire in it so when i see those words in the context of music i think terrible emo. Maybe i'll go find some later.

Cant narrow the list down anymore than this due to the span of styles making it nearly impossible to compare band to band:

The Mars Volta
Between the Buried and Me
mewithoutYou
Muse
Death Cab for Cutie
Dillinger Escape Plan
Hopesfall

Mogwai and Sigur Ros just barely miss the cut with a 4th quarter '97 first LP.

yea. they were the last ones i added, and only because i have such a bias to their first few albums :p

but as far as being as innovative and stuff i agree that they really dont fit in with the other bands on the list.

^^^ as far as i understood it wasnt officially released as an LP until 2002. It was a casette basically put out by the band and a very small label in 1998. Wikipedia is incorrect in stating 1997, even though they started selling it at shows in 1997 before its official release. If you look at the release date on the physical copy of the album and also on the label's site who released it they both say 1998. I had to double check myself before I posted it in my list heh.

then again its kind of up in the air as ive now seen the date as sep 97, oct 97, december 97 on music stores online but my copy says 1998 and the label's site says 98.

I also see where it says it was written and recorded before death cab for cutie was a band. interesting. I did not know that. So I dono I give them the benefit of the doubt

I understand what you're saying here. For years I never listened to Grandaddy because I always pictured a really old dude with a horrible voice. Then one day I realized how dumb that was and listened to one of their albums I loved them.

I'm gonna go with Arcade Fire here as well.

Late Registration

because that opened a whole new world of hip-hop and R&B I had never listened to before (Common, The Roots, etc) that I should have been listening to for a long time

Explosions In The Sky (How Strange, Innocence in 00)
Godspeed You Black Emperor! (F?A?8 was released on LP in 97 and the current cut on CD in 98)
Arcade Fire (Funeral in 04)
Final Fantasy (Has A Good Home in 05) - I always say that Owen Pallet will be one of the more influential musicians to come out of Canada and that is pretty impressive
Broken Social Scene (Feel Good Lost in 01)
National (self-titled in 01) - Best band making American music
Okkervil River (their first album didn't come out until 02 but an EP might be cutting it close)

I think it's Arcade Fire but that's not a bad list. The Stripes are curiously absent. I also like the selection of Broken Social Scene but I think that's just a lot of personal preference on my part. National is the best band making over the counter sleep medication.

LCD Soundsystem is a GREAT mention. I think being pigeonholed in the electronic genre would keep him from taking the crown, but not to take anything away from how good he is.

Is this a Arcade Fire v White Stripes question?

Yeah I am with you and the 80%, I feel like I am either missing out on some good music, or these bands actually suck.
