I lived in Clairemont, NH for a couple years/winters. I live in Denver now-this is my second year/winter here.

It was colder and snowed more in NH then it has snowed in Denver. There is more humidity and there were some really bad freezes. My car's tires actually froze to the ground a couple times.

NH in the summer is a lot like NC except there are more bugs. People talk very funny in NH.

I never once was bitten by a mosquito in NC, got bitten daily in NH. There were big flies that bit too.

spend a night outside around beaufort, nc near the water with no breeze. The skeeters down there are so big they could stand flat footed and fuck a full grown turkey.

Anything north of Virginia is fantastic, the south is full of idiots, you're going to be surprised at being surrounded by people who are capable of thoughts other than Cookout, Chevys, and pig pickin's.

actually a lot (most) of the non-big city parts of the northeast have been more redneck than southern rednecks in my experiences in being from up there and having all my family scattered throughout the northeast. Big northern cities are quite different though. And the coastal towns are beautiful for the most part.

I worked in Portsmouth from January to April of last year, flying up there three to four days a week. It does indeed get really damn cold in winter... not always a ton of snow, and they know how to deal with it well up there and keep the roads clear, but definitely very cold and occasionally pretty windy as well.

Portsmouth is a stereotypical small New England town that I would describe as "quaint." There are some nice restaurants and bars in the little downtown area, and people seemed pretty nice; at least at the places we went, there were a good number of folks our age. I was doing consulting though, which means pretty long hours, so I can't say I really saw much of the area during the day or got to explore much beyond where we were staying. There are a lot of other small cities just like it close by, including a nice outlet mall area just over the border in Bridgeport, Maine.

I didn't spend any time there other than in the winter, so I can't comment on summer bugs specifically in Portsmouth.

Lived in Kennebunkport Maine for two years going to design school and really enjoyed it. I wouldn't want to live up there for good though. Weather is neat at first seeing that amount of snow but that wears off very quickly I found.

I did like the history of the area. Here in Raleigh there's so much new construction, seems like all the houses are those ugly big boxes. The neighborhoods in NH had personality.

i lived in Newport, RI for six months (Nov-May) and loved every minute of it. It's perfect during the summer and during the winter, the whole area gets this "locals" kind of feel to it with the tourists headed to warmer climates. sure, you'll have colder weather and more snow, but unless you live outside during the winters where you are now, you're not going to feel that much of an impact

as far as "yankees" you're not going to find the long island guidos nor the upper NY rednecks nor the boston southies in NH.

I grew up in Connecticut (outside Hartford) and moved to Raleigh in 2000.

What I liked/miss - The summers in New England are nice. Not nearly as humid and much milder.
What I didn't like - The winters are long and cold. Snow can start in Oct and last until May. The weather can be depressing, the sky is gray all the time and people can be snotty and just not friendly like they are down here

Just worried that New Englanders are stoic you know, not friendly. They don't talk to you in the grocery store or anything. They don't smile much, maybe their faces are frozen by all that snow!!

I never had that problem with the people when i lived up there

and you're only 50 miles from boston, so the size of the city shouldn't really impact what you can do

i don't know, maybe it's because i really like the outdoors and the history in NE that I like the area so much. fwiw, i hated living in the south growing up and only stayed in atlanta after grad school because i met someone here

plus, Portsmouth is the hometown of John Paul Jones, the father of the US Navy, so it's got that going for it

I've been up there quite a bit, and I find the people to be as friendly as anywhere. Of course, you'll pick and choose who you talk to because I'm assuming you wouldn't want to talk to anyone sketchy, but I think they're generally as friendly as peeps in Raleigh. Plus so many people in Raleigh aren't even from here - many are yanks - and I find them to be quite nice and chatty.

That is the bad thing about the north is that it is ALWAYS gray. You'll get that depression caused form lack of sunlight.

People can be rude, especially on the road. When I visited NY after five years of being in the south I realized where my road rage came from.
