Well, the best I can say is start at the bottom if you need something ASAP. Network, keep looking, and work your ass off. Eventually something will always click.

so just take a job. you're 60000000 times more attractive to employers if you just have ANY job. if you go in there unemployed, they know damn well you can get a job and havent yet. kinda puts a lazy label on you. unmotivated, unwilling to work, etc.

don't worry, i'm going to take a job.

i have a bit of a cushion, because my research assistantship runs until august. however, my adviser has urged me to find a permanent job and get myself out there. i'm trying to find something research related that interests me, then i'll resort to other jobs. i can always go back to being a vet tech.

i've got someone at NIEHS watching out for me. i'm keeping my eyes on duke, unc, ncsu and ncsu cvm. also frequenting the major job sites.

you've already given it a pretty good try, right? at some point the real employers start to think that you choose not to work... if youre too stubborn to take a 10 dollar an hour BS job, how much shit are you gonna expect from them if you end up working for them. thats how they see that shit.

i know im probably not telling you anything you dont already know. you may, however, need some outside perspective on the amount of time involved.

i also can't work until may, so i'm getting looked over by people who can start sooner.

honestly, i'm not concerned about pay. right now i make 14k a year, so anything is an improvement.

but i also don't want to take a job that i know i can't stick with for more than 6 months. it doesn't really look good to hop from job to job.

i guess so. but usually if you can make it a month, you can make it for a while. otherwise you can just sweep that little mistake under the rug

i personally like the line "it just wasnt a good marriage"

Got a letter in the mail today from a company in Raleigh I'd interviewed with (and follow ups went well). I knew it was bad b/c the envelope was thin.

"you're great, blah blah blah, we regret to inform you the position has been filled, blah blah blah, we'll keep your information on file.

Fucking hell

Kitty B, you must be reeaaallly picky.

When I was looking for those jobs I would get at least 2-3 calls a week for interviews.

But I was also applying for 2903402934083 a week.

i'm not really picky.

but i simply was not qualified for most research technician positions because i work in reproductive physiology and embryo production, not molecular biology or genetics.
i'm also extremely overqualified for any general animal care (aka, kennel tech) position at a vet office.

i applied to several positions, none of which i was fully qualified for. one screened out my resume during the application and the other (an embryologist position) rejected me because i have no experience in human embryology.

i applied to several genetics labs that focus on transgenics, cloning, etc, with the hope of being hired and gaining new skills. none have contacted me.

the position i'm waiting to hear back on would be perfect because i could gain experience in several areas of interest, which would make me more qualified for future jobs.

you should remember that you're NOT in my field. you don't apply to the same jobs i apply to. so don't assume you know how picky i am. i'm not looking for a great paying job. in fact, i've gone to school for 7 years for 2 degrees and i'll probably start out at 21K.

i had networked. unfortunately there just aren't positions right now. labs are tight on money and already staffed. so they (my committee) are doing what they can as personal references to help me get my foot in the door.

hah, that tone wasn't meant to be as harsh as it looks.

i've had a long day of studying for my defense.

i just get pissed when people start acting like i'm being too picky about a job.
