NC State is not and never has been a school known for athletics whatsoever. Just don't think about it. Yea we had two miraculous years in basketball but that was before most people on here were born.We are an engineering and agriculture school. You want sports, go to Durham or Chapel Hill.
3/27/2008 2:19:36 PM
^ regardless of what you think about our athletic program as a whole, our first national title in 74 was in no way 'miraculous'
3/27/2008 2:23:13 PM
^^ yeah it's not like we virtually founded acc basketball or anything. we were neeeever known for sports.[Edited on March 27, 2008 at 2:24 PM. Reason : dhj]

when app state could put a hurting on what we call a football team, its time to throw in the towel peopleJimmy V was a good coach because he knew to pay playersnot get a bunch of idiots that graduate to the NBA DL
3/27/2008 2:27:18 PM
yeah i'd rather go to durham or chapel hill so I can watch a talented football team...

Our championships more than 20 years ago are really starting to lose their luster. I'd give it about 10 years and our history will have about as much weight as the San Francisco's, Marquette's, and Villanova's of the college basketball world. At some point we need to make another run, or our recent history starts to really pull our overall program down with the rest of the "mediocres."
3/27/2008 2:43:16 PM
At least our recent basketball standouts like Grundy, Hodge, Evtimov, and Atsur have decent NBA careers.Given another year to develop, maybe TA McLendon could make the Pro Bowl
3/27/2008 2:46:16 PM
Its not Grundy's fault the NBA never realized his greatness...

If you're taking Personal Fouls as the gospel, you're a moron.Just saying. It's not the most unbiased piece of work out there.
3/27/2008 3:48:21 PM
^^why not? those 3 schools are still dancing so they're obviously having better seasons than us, but what makes us "not anywhere close" to them? Whens the last time Louisville won a title? Who is the last baller they put in the NBA, Pervis Ellison?Pitino and Izzo are two of the best coaches in the game right now, that'd be about the only reason you could say their programs are better than ours]
3/27/2008 3:50:07 PM
ahem... I think you may have missed a school with two titles?Anyway... We haven't been a consistently great program since the mid-70s. I think that much is not debateable. That's not to say we can't be again, but the odds are certainly stacked against us.^ Louisville has TONS more Final Fours and has far more recent success than us. I wouldn't hesistate at all to put them ahead of us...[Edited on March 27, 2008 at 3:55 PM. Reason : x]
3/27/2008 3:55:02 PM
i missed Florida also but I figured the Gators and your boys up in Connecticut have won recently enough where they're still viewed as modern powerhouses...ie the dumbasses in my bracket pool picking UConn to get to the Final Four
3/27/2008 3:56:07 PM
State still has more basketball tradition than the rest of the ACC combined, minus dook and uncch.
3/27/2008 4:03:43 PM
not to derail your argument, twista, but i think francisco garcia gets significant pt with the kings.
3/27/2008 4:04:55 PM
UCLA, Indiana, UNC, Duke, Kentuckyonly 2 of those 5 are in the same statehey they're in our state that'll make things easy on us!^yeah i forgot about him...he's ok, he got a lot more minutes when kevin martin was injured...powell is actually getting some minutes for the clippers with brand out all year...wish he wouldve waited a couple more years to declare for the draft[Edited on March 27, 2008 at 4:05 PM. 3/27/2008 4:05:07 PM
yea twista, both powell and simmons coulda been quality big men in the nba (not that the opportunity has passed em by by any means) with another year or two in college and perhaps a different coach.
3/27/2008 4:07:48 PM
^^we've got good history we just have some type of expectations that we should be able to get back to that point...some have different expectations than others, but historically we are a very solid program...but it just happens that 2 of the top 5 programs of all time are within a half hour drive from us...louisville for example only has to deal with being in the shadow of 1 kentucky...usc or california only have to worry about being in the shadow of 1 UCLA...we have 2 shadows although hopefully K's recruiting will continue to fall off^one thing i'll give herb credit for is he did recruit a few nba caliber players...simmons, powell, even hodge...hopefully they can continue to improve their play and make a national name for themselves in the nba...also hopefully the heat sign hodge to a 10-dayer]

I do know that when Valvano stepped down, we were 15th in all time win pct. Even after a few decades of dormancy, we're still like 22nd

3/28/2008 10:47:31 AM
so basically we are in the top 25like if there was a list/poll of who were the 25 greatest of all time, we should be able to make that?
3/28/2008 11:00:32 AM
^definitely
3/28/2008 11:01:14 AM
athletically, that's all they've got.we'll be acting the high and mighty same way about football in the near future

gotta toss San Fran somewhere in the mix...they're the only team with 2 national titles that I didn't notice on your list at first glancebut yeah 1-5 are spot on as much as i loathe #3
3/28/2008 12:50:37 PM
I was afraid to put them in there b/c I thought people would criticize the choice to put them in there. And I can't completely blame them. The Dons really haven't done anything since. I'd like to put them in there b/c of the fact that they won 2 national championships, and that Bill Russell was the sole reason why they decided to widen the lane. That had a very big historical impact on the game.
