I can't watch movies on itunes without it slowing down and getting jumpy. My desktop is old, but i've never had a problem with videos in the past. I just recently reformatted and removed all the crap i don't use anymore but even a clean install of xp doesn't help. I have a a 2.4GHz p4 with 1GB of RAM. What should I do to make my computer run optimally? Should I just get a cheap desktop? I just bought a laptop, so I could only afford a few hundred dollars for a desktop.

well your first problem is itunesyour second is the amount of ram that you have...get some more
3/24/2008 8:41:43 PM
learn how to use msconfig (disable nearly everything)get more ramand yeah, try other video watching programs]
3/24/2008 8:43:02 PM
well the crucial scanner recommends two 1GB pc2700 sticks, so thats what i'll do first
3/24/2008 9:06:20 PM
iTunes shouldn't tax that machine with a fresh XP install. There is either software on your computer that you're not aware of eating up resources or you have a fucked up XP install. You're not streaming movies are you... or using other applications in the background?
3/24/2008 10:14:59 PM
What resolution video are you trying to play? If it's 720/1080 it could easily get jumpy with those specs. Although i'm not up to date on itunes, so i don't know what resolution videos they have.
3/24/2008 10:26:02 PM
I didn't think about high-def content. 1080i/p could potentially be jumpy depending on what the background programs are running.
3/24/2008 11:30:42 PM
its whatever resolution itunes rental movies and tv shows are640 x 480[Edited on March 25, 2008 at 3:36 PM. Reason : .]

^ That' shouldn't cause a slow down. Check you background processes.

wow it's really sad that i can recognize most of those processes off the top of my head.
3/25/2008 6:56:58 PM
youre fineget some more ram and a different media player
3/25/2008 7:55:45 PM
what else will play .m4v
3/25/2008 8:09:29 PM
well the RAM didn't helpdoes itunes just suck this much? it plays fine for 20-30 minutes and then the video starts getting very jumpy and eventually freezes.quicktime is the same[Edited on March 27, 2008 at 8:35 PM. Reason : .]
3/27/2008 8:17:46 PM
ccleaner + adaware + spybot + defrag + file cleanup
3/27/2008 8:40:16 PM
VLCvideolan.org
3/27/2008 8:49:10 PM
thats what i usually use but when i try to play anything i bought from itunes it only has audio^^all done (well it said defrag was not needed when i analyzed)all other movies play fine. i can even high def content with vlc player. but with itunes it jumps around.[Edited on March 27, 2008 at 9:21 PM. 3/27/2008 9:20:51 PM
yeah i don't think anything else will play something you have bought with itunes since it is probably locked (i haven't used it in awhile so it might not be now?)
3/27/2008 9:51:18 PM
Doesn't itunes now sell non-protected music? I doubt they do with the movies, but i remember seeing something about the music. If you pay like .10$ extra you can get the non-protected ones.
3/27/2008 10:34:16 PM
dude, you need a video card with hardware h264 support.get one, the jumpy video will go away and you will be happy. RAM doesn't do a goddamn thing for video decompression
3/28/2008 12:50:56 AM
don't roll your eyes, i tried what everyone suggested

^ is right.nothing against you pooljobs, you asked for legitimate help. These guys completely ignored your actual problem and just started posting the typical Geek Squad responses.
3/28/2008 1:40:35 PM
so what cheap video card should i get
3/28/2008 4:20:02 PM
Have you explored the option that maybe your heatsink is full of dust, thus getting your cpu really hot and throttling itself down after the 20-30 min of decoding itunes videos? Just a thought before you spent money on a new graphics card. Also what type of graphics card does your mobo support? agp or pci-e Price Range? ~$100[Edited on March 29, 2008 at 3:08 PM. Reason : bla]

agp, right now i have an nvidia geforce4 ti 4200i do have some dust buildup on the fan, i'll see what my temps get to while playing a videprocessor temps are getting above 170 degrees F[Edited on March 29, 2008 at 4:58 PM. Reason : .]
3/29/2008 4:46:13 PM
lots of dust between the fan and heat sink. i cleaned out the mat of dust and temps are waaay down. around 105 degrees while playing videos and no jumping yet.
3/29/2008 5:28:32 PM
