Is it possible to wire a 12V DC device directly to a car battery for home use? Would I ground it to the battery's negative terminal or to something else? I had suitemates who managed to rig up a remote control door lock to their deadbolt but I don't remember if they used a car battery or some other power source.

you realize its cheaper to find a 12vdc wall wart than to monitor and charge an SLA battery correct?
