I'm having ACL reconstructive surgery recently, and am wondering if I'll qualify for picking up one of these bad boys. I've already located the proper form on line, but wonder if this is something I can mail in to the DMV or do I have to show up in person?

Can anyone else speak from experience?

I can't answer all your questions, but I know my roommate had a temporary handicap parking permit for his ACL surgery, so I can answer with some certainty the part about your qualifying: Yes. I just don't know what the process was.

In NC, you have to have a doctor sign for it.

i went through the temp and the perm sigh up process.

you dont even have to take it in there, you can get a friend/family if you dont have time. its just like $5 for each additional placard

(at least in NC)

^^yep. here a doc writes it just like any other prescription. not a clue for ny. i can say i've effectively used an nc handicap placard in nyc though.

yah, they work everywhere. but some laws are different. you can use a placard at any meter around for as long as you want, but in DC you can only use it for like 4 hours at a time.

read the thread. is simple. at least two of us in here have gotten them before.

its just sign and drive. you take your Dr. the paperwork. and you take it to dmv. no questions asked.

I didn't know if a NC MD had to sign off on it, or if one in NY would be good. I'm guessing Teg also has a NCDL and a NY doc.

when you get a placard, they register it, and give you a registration card, like the one your car has, with your name and address on it.

if you live in NY, i would get an NY dr. to do it since a NC dr. probably wont sign unless you know him.

i had a Dr. in Charlotte sign for mine. i live in raleigh. i know its the same state, but the MD just signs his name and i believe where he works and stuff. they dont care at the DMV because they have no right to question you. my Dr. had the same last name as me btw and they dont say anything even to this day when i go in to get replacement placards.

either way, they will honor NC placards in other states, they might be a bit more strict with them though.

didn't know that. even with the electronic meters like the ones across from campus? parking downtown is going to get a lot better.

my placard isn't permanent. you have to renew the thing every 5 years or so don't you? i hate that.

well its permanent compared to the temp. one which is paper and only lasts for a few months.

but yeah, its good for 5 years.

and yeah the electronic ones across campus are good for free parking with handicap placards. you just cannot use them on campus because apparently you first have to apply for a campus permit to use their handicap spots (after 5 its ok to use).

meter parking is free all around the state as far as i know. ive never had a problem with the meters as long as my pass is up.
